I had ingrown toenail surgery nearly 2 weeks ago, have followed the post operation care but I'm slightly worried if it's infected. Can anyone tell me?

immie326 · 13/11/2022 19:17

I'm not a podiatrist, but I think it would be hot it it was.
Can you send the photo to your surgeon? Or the nurse?

Chloefairydust · 13/11/2022 19:28

yeah I would say that’s infected, go see your GP ASAP 😮

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 13/11/2022 19:28

It does look red at the base.

immie326 · 13/11/2022 19:34

Thanks all, will send a picture to GP

Wow. Yep needs seeing to.
Is it hot, painful and smelly?
I'm not medical but It may need oral
Antibiotics or an antibacterial dressing.

I had similar when I had a cyst received in my neck. They used an iodine dress in and I think I have oral antibiotics. It was 10 years ago And I went to the local minor injuries unit.

LiftyLift · 13/11/2022 19:37

I had the same surgery a few years back and my toe looked similar and wasn’t infected. It was just healing. If it’s sore definitely see someone.

missverstaendnis · 13/11/2022 19:38

don't expect for a GP to offer more than antibiotics.
I have had similar for nearly a YEAR now- will have to get it treated privately as GP not offering anything than the course of antibiotics which did fuck all.

endofthelinefinally · 13/11/2022 19:41

Yes. Look at the area of inflammation. That needs looking at asap.

Bestcatmum · 13/11/2022 19:47

It looks pretty normal to me for 2 weeks post op (nhs podiatrist here) the phenol used to cauterise the nail bed often leaves it red like that.
It looks like you haven't rested it enough. Are you wearing closed in shoes/working?

immie326 · 13/11/2022 19:56

Thank you @Bestcatmum yes I'm wearing closed shoes and working (on my feet as in retail) I did where sandals originally but work ain't keen because of health and safety. Any shoes which are closed that are a good idea?

It looks normal healing to me, you're only 2 weeks post op, did they give you an info leaflet with advice to follow?
The redness does not seem to be spreading. Give it a quick dunk in some salty cooled boiled water, let it dry off then cover with a breathable dressing , change this daily until completely dry, will take at least 6 weeks, they should have advised you of all this

bumblefeline · 13/11/2022 20:13

My dd's looked very similar after she had hers treated, we just kept soaking it in salt water.

username8888 · 14/11/2022 11:18

Also advise keeping the foot in open toed sandals and not enclosed whenever you can and salt water soaks.
