When your son's voice breaks does it affect you less if he sounds upset?

Weird question alert...DS age 10 is playing monopoly with his brother and he's annoyed, talking in a stressed high pitched voice etc. I can't tune it out, it's like when he was a baby crying. It makes me stressed just hearing it.

Is this normal? I think it is.
Does this change once their voices break or can you always hear your baby in there?

No it's worse when it sounds like a grown man crying.

No idea as my boys are 2 and 4 but I'm following as I hadn't even considered this!

My grown up son being audibly upset is more heart wrenching now than it was when he was young.

@Mosik oh damn.

His brother has Mayfair. It's not going to end well.

My mum felt very strange when I told her I'd started menopause. I don't think this ever changes!

No I Dont think think it stops getting under your skin. My son is 16 and his voice has been broken a good while but I can still tell if he's about to ask for money/help. There is a bit of vulnerability in the tone. When he's upset now, his problems are a bit more complicated too. Subject choices for state exams clashing for example. Harder to solve than "we'll get a new one".
So, It's not like I think "well that man can take care of himself"!!

Absolutely this.

Hellocatshome · 13/11/2022 16:17

No because if my kids are genuinely upset it breaks my heart whatever age they are.

OldWivesTale · 13/11/2022 16:22

No it's worse.

oldtableleg · 13/11/2022 20:25

no, it's definitely worse.

Proper complex pain rather than passing child angst/crossness.
