I've just put a pair of jeans in the freezer.

As an experiment. It's (allegedly) a way of extending their wearability or something. Anyone else tried? I'm not sure how long I'm supposed to leave them in for though.

Well, they'll last forever if you leave them in there!! 😆😆😆

SoupDragon · 13/11/2022 11:34

the only way this would extend their wearability is if you left them in there and never got them out.

anyway, the experiment only works if you only freeze one half of them.

flingingmelon · 13/11/2022 11:36

In theory it kills the bacteria so you don't need to wash them - you'd still need to spot clean a stain though.

I know many men who are obsessed with jeans and swear blind about this stuff. It does keep the wash fresh but who knows about actual fresh.

flingingmelon · 13/11/2022 11:38

Also, there's no point doing this unless you are wearing raw denim and you want to keep the colour really sharp.

Saffroned · 13/11/2022 11:38

How will you wear them? Defrost them two days before?

What's raw denim? Is normal denim cooked?

usernamenotaccepted · 13/11/2022 11:47

😁 yes I mean time between washes. I don't know if they're raw tbh. They're 100% cotton 501 original so no elastic whatsoever. I'll leave them in for a couple of days and see how they are.

It is supposed to work for tights and stockings, although I've never tried it.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 13/11/2022 12:48

That's reassuring, because people thought I was odd keeping frozen peas in the cutlery drawer of the sideboard for easy access.

(they don't last long in there, by the way Sad)

2bazookas · 13/11/2022 13:10

I think it works better if you bury them in a peat bog. Or wrapped in gold under a pyramid.

usernamenotaccepted · 13/11/2022 13:16

I sense that certain posters aren't taking this issue seriously.

Bacteria freeze and defrost really well.

usernamenotaccepted · 13/11/2022 13:27

@PauliString I'm disappointed to hear that.
I've gone to fetch them back out and stick in the washing machine.

Vicliz24 · 13/11/2022 13:28

Will you defrost them in the microwave?

Bacteria freeze and defrost really well.

As do fungal spores ( just adding that in as we're throwing scientific facts into the pot)

Freezing to get chewing gum off clothes works BTW .

usernamenotaccepted · 13/11/2022 13:30

I haven't got a microwave. Thought I might stick them under the grill.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/11/2022 13:31

Let them cool before you wear them , those metal buttons et darned hot !

flingingmelon · 13/11/2022 16:26

@Saffroned

Sort of!

Raw denim is when you dye the denim and then make jeans etc with it. It's usually dark indigo and very flat looking.

Most denim is washed, so some of the dye comes off and it gets that multi layered colour familiar to denim.

flingingmelon · 13/11/2022 16:29

@PauliString

That's why I said 'in theory'!

We are talking about people who have very intense arguments about selvedge finish and stitches per inch. I'm going to go out on a limb and say I'm not sure that the actual cleanliness of the item is more important than the look of the dye.

StillWeRise · 13/11/2022 16:29

hopefully you'll kill off any clothes moths though

To be honest, you're best just following the washing instructions. If you want to maintain the colour wash inside out on delicate for a short spin.

SheWoreARaspberryBeret123 · 13/11/2022 16:36

What?! 🤢

DiDonk · 13/11/2022 16:42

My favourite brand of jeans suggest wearing them six months before the first wash.

Then washing on cold inside out.

Haven't quite managed that...

BadNomad · 13/11/2022 17:13

You're keeping your stinky unwashed jeans in with the fish fingers? That's a little bit gross.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 13/11/2022 18:38

No, the barbeque! It doesn't get a lot of use during the colder months so use it for defrosting your jeans.
Keep an eye on it though and don't put freshly thawed jeans on straight away. Those rivets retain their heat for quite a long time, I can tell you! 😰
