Opened a whole chicken this morning, dated tomorrow. Bit of a whiff when I opened the bag. Sniffing the chicken close up it had a bit of a smell but then it is a dead animal it's never going to smell wonderful is itConfused anyway would you cook and eat it or chuck it? Don't really want to poison the kids!

Chicken always had a bit of a 'farty' smell when just opened. If the smell doesn't go, I would Chuck if in doubt

What kind of smell? Sulphurous (like eggs) is fine for poultry. I had this dilemma about the turkey on Christmas day last year and the above was the advice i got on here. I cooked it. It was fine.

I would throw it personally. Chicken does have a bit of a smell but it wouldn't hit me when unpackaging only if I smelled it up close

If it’s not the normal smell I chuck it. I always find packed meat has a smell when you open it, that does away after about 5 mins, but it never smacks me in the face when opened. I wouldn’t risk it on chicken personally!

Chuck.

I’m very relaxed about best before dates, but it works both ways. If something is good past it’s date I’d happily eat, but if it’s off early then trust your senses.

Especially with chicken.

Trust your nose. Chuck.

Thanks everyone. I had stuck it in the oven before asking and I just went to chuck it and The Smell was still there after 10 minutes of cooking so that's not good. Bit annoying having to throw it away but not as annoying as everyone stuck at home vomiting for a week!

I'd take it back to the shop.
