Or is the human body just set up to
pass out at certain conditions

I'm not a terrible fainter but I have fainted or almost fainted a few times.

Most effective way ever to get a seat on a packed commuter train. Grin I just got hotter and hotter and dizzier and dizzier and then it all went black. Had similar happen at home when getting up but that's much better now my blood pressure is higher - I used to get very dizzy whenever I stood up at one point.

Hahaha I’ve gotten a seat on the tube by fainting. Throwing up also works, clears the area pretty fast. Thankfully I had a carrier bag in my bag so wasn’t too messy 😬🤢

Littlepies · 12/11/2022 21:12

I’d love to know if anyone has been diagnosed with anything as I’ve always thought it’s one of those things. But there’s no pattern to it.

Sausagedognamedmash · 12/11/2022 21:14

I faint a lot. Low blood pressure. Can faint from seated as well so have been told by the consultant who completed a ton of tests when I grew tired of fainting all the time that I shouldn't drive and should always be aware of my surroundings. Also have to carry an emergency card in case I'm out with the kids and faint. It's been an absolute nightmare for the past 10 years to be honest.

Nellodee · 12/11/2022 21:15

I have fainted once during a precipitous labour. Giving birth in 20 minutes flat pretty much hit me like a freight train. One moment I was sat up, the next I woke up on the floor with my mouth full of blood. I didn’t even really register the pain, though I’m sure that’s what caused it, I just have a vague memory of something slamming into me, like a grand piano being dropped on my head or something. I don’t think anyone is immune to passing out if the circumstances are right.

RambamThankyouMam · 12/11/2022 21:16

I often come over queer after having blood taken. I have to lie down otherwise I faint. My hearing goes fuzzy, I get all hot, and my vision darkens and thickens.

motleymop · 12/11/2022 21:19

When a person faints, is it common to lose control of a bodily function?

ShowOfHands · 12/11/2022 21:20

I have v low bp (80/50) and a resting heart rate of 48. I never faint!

DD faints, most often during her period but when hot or standing for too long as well. She has a diagnosis of POTs (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) which is related to the fact she has EDS. During a sit/stand test, she went from a HR of 64 sitting, to a HR of 140 just standing up. And it climbed more and stayed there until she felt wobbly and had to sit down.

Uurrjb · 12/11/2022 21:21

I had a phase for about 10 years of fainting and it was absolutely mortifying, I had this horrible sickening sensation before it happened and would wake up having usually banged my head badly

have done in public toilets, in queue at shops, during handover at work

usually resulted in black eyes a few days later from horrendous forehead bang that bruised

the pp…why would you not feel any sympathy? You feel so sick before and can’t stop it and it’s so humiliating

NeedAHoliday2021 · 12/11/2022 21:22

I have really low blood pressure and pass out if I’m feeling poorly or standing for a long time. There’s a few of us in my extended family and dd2 passed out on landing coming home from holiday so looks like she’s got that from me.

Feintfainter · 12/11/2022 21:31

Heat and anxiety can do it. I get really claustrophobic on buses this time of year with all the layers and over heating, windows shut, too many people, add in some hyperventilation and I often feel woosie so I can see how someone would keel over.

Fainting is your body cutting its functions down to the bare minimum and you can't stop it, so yes you lose control. I guess you mean pissing yourself though - not in my experience.

newtb · 12/11/2022 21:43

Nearly fainted once when the nerve in a tooth was dodgy, took communion and all the stained glass windows spun around my head. Shot out pdq into the fresh air.
However, have passed out more times than I can remember due to hypothermia which is not nice. It's feeling as if I'm falling backwards. I just get myself under 2 quilts when that happens as fast as possible.

ByeByeMr · 12/11/2022 20:42

I've felt faint and close to passing out and it's not a nice feeling. It usually starts with just not feeling right, nausea, hot and clammy and a wave of panic.

Do you ever get that sense of dread and doom right before it?
It has to be one of the worst feelings ever. As though you are going to vomit and feeling as though your breath is hard to draw in.

If I don't eat enough it happens and happened lots when pregnant.
Ended up with nurses running round me during a blood donation session with my legs being propped in the air because it happened again.

Maybe there's something wrong with me 😂

Watching with interest

DotBall · 12/11/2022 21:47

I’ve never fainted and never felt like I was going to either. Neither has my mum, DH or DD. Must be a genetic component to it maybe? We all have various health issues but still never passed out.

moggerhanger · 12/11/2022 21:51

I'm not a fainter, even though I have low RHR and BP. I've come close a couple of times when having very painful periods, and after having my coil changed. But I do go spectacularly pale on the rare occasions I feel faint! Alarms people no end.

SongforWhoever · 12/11/2022 21:56

I used to faint quite often when young. I was 12 the first time and late 20s the last time. It happened most when I was pregnant. I used to have low blood pressure so probably connected. I think it can be worse for those people with you seeing you suddently become unconscious.

Bemyclementine · 12/11/2022 21:59

@motleymop I have done, only once though out of the hundreds of times I have fainted

Hoppinggreen · 12/11/2022 22:00

BlackboardMonitorVimes · 12/11/2022 20:33

I have never fainted, even though many people in the same circumstances as I've had, would. My friend passes out at the most minor (to me) circumstances. It definitely varies by person.

I'd actually love to know what fainting feels like. Weirdly.

Same here, I always thought it was quite romantic to “swoon”, it’s probably not in reality though
DD faints quite easily

BarmyArmy22 · 12/11/2022 22:01

Low bp here. Yes, I faint when overheating & in a situation where I'm standing for a while. Have really hurt my head on occasion. Am often sick afterwards. Have also had the added humiliation and dishonour of wetting myself once when I fainted at a friends😳fun times!

Thecatisboss · 12/11/2022 22:06

I started passing out about 6 years ago & then did it every 10 months or so. Got diagnosed finally with vasovagel syncope (after a fun tilt table test where you get tilted backwards and then stood upright for 20 minutes then you have medication to help induce an episode however I only lasted 15 minutes before i fainted.

Later on got diagnosed with low blood sugar which causes collapses as well.

Usually come round with at least 1 black eye and feel very woozy.

barbedwired · 12/11/2022 22:15

I passed out once, back in the 80s after a toke on some ransoms joint in a nightclub in soho - sort of slid to the floor leaning on the ciggie machine for support. Came to being carried outside by mates.

chickeningonup · 12/11/2022 22:15

I fainted once from low blood pressure, twice in the space of 5 minutes from a nurse taking blood and twice in 5 minutes after having a porn star martini (I wasn't even drunk ffs)

Absolutely detest it and every single time I'm convinced "this is it.. game over.. byeeee.. dead"*

*clearly not dead

Notreallyawaitress · 12/11/2022 22:16

I faint quite often when in restaurants having a nice meal, the posher the place the more likely it is to happen.. Fortunately I’m normally sitting down and I can tell a few minutes before it happens. Feel very disoriented and sweat starts pouring off me. My DP can sometimes stop it if he grabs my hand and gets me to focus/ breathe. I think it’s the food causing my blood pressure to drop suddenly - it’s only something that’s happened in the last ten years. Absolutely humiliating

Rovinonmars · 12/11/2022 22:24

Yep. I'm a big old fainter and have been since childhood. Had a big gap where it didn't happen from maybe 14-28, but it's back now. Think it's blood pressure related. I would love to be someone that didn't faint because it's really quite horrible

Luckydog7 · 12/11/2022 22:29

I have naturally low bp and faint if I eg bang an elbow very easily. Just get light headed as the pain can cause a sudden bp change and as its low already, down I go. Its much better as an adult but perhaps I don't hurt myself in stupid ways as much.
