Trying to teach myself to crochet and let’s just say it is not coming naturally. Taken me bloody ages to even do the foundation chain but think I’ve just about cracked that (albeit there’s little consistency in tension / stitch size but hey ho it’ll do for now!)

I have a scarf pattern supposedly for beginners but deciphering it is like double Dutch….

Can anyone tell me what the ‘chain 3’ means at step 2? Does it mean add 3 more chains/ stitches to the foundation chain? And if so why doesn’t the first step just say 113 in the foundation chain?!

if it means something else please can someone enlighten me! Some kind of turning stitch? I haven’t even tried to work out step 3…

Argh this is so frustrating! Please help!

yes!

not sure, you seem to have an unusual pattern. Usually it would just tell you to chain x, and then to double crochet etc into the Xth chain from the hook.

Yes that's exactly what it means.

It's written like that because the three chains are technically the first double crochet of the next row.

As PPs said. The instructions are written in that seemingly confusing way so they can also tell you to repeat steps 2 and 3. The 3 chain stitches are the turning chains to build up the height of the stitches used in the rest of the row. Hope that makes sense. Good luck x

Put a stitch marker in the last stitch on your foundation row.

The chain 3 is to build up the height of the second row, you then do effectively your first treble (uk treble, American double) into the fifth stitch from from the hook, and then carry on across the row.

Thank you all! That really helps. I may be back with more confusion in due course 🤣

You will never get perfection on your first piece, expect to unwind it multiple times before you get it right. It is part of the learning process.
