Can't shake off this damn cough!

Has anyone else had an awful cold, accompanied by an awful cough recently? The cold started exactly 3 weeks ago,I felt ghastly. Slight temperature,no appetite, just wanted to sleep but couldn't because I kept coughing! (Definitely wasn't Covid btw,I did 3 tests over 3 days, all negative). I felt much better after 6 days, but now,3 weeks later,I still have an awful cough, particularly troublesome at night. Anyone else been afflicted, and how long did it take to clear up? I'm wondering whether to (try to) see my GP as it's gone on for 3 weeks.

Yes me, and I’ve passed it on to dh. I’ve had it for about 3 weeks. Cough cough cough cough yeugh. Bloody awful, and keeping me awake night after night.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 13/11/2022 21:13

I’ve had it for three weeks but have had the worst sore throat and earache too. Has anyone else had the earache? SO MUCH PAIN!

Nurse at the GP surgery said no point in antibiotics as it’s a virus and tbf, I know that antibiotic resistance is getting to be a massive medical problem so I’m happy not to be given them, but I wish there was better alternative advice than ‘fluids and paracetamol’…

I'm into the third week of an absolutely stinking cold, but I envy you the cough because what I have instead is snot. Litres of thick, adhesive snot - it is so bad I wanted to start a thread asking for suggesting to dissolve it, but I was afraid people would think I was some kind of snot troll pervert. How long can this go on for?!

lol at ‘snot troll pervert’

and now probably there is one !

ewwwwww

The coughing at night is driving me insane. I cough until I cough up phlegm. It tickles my throat all day and despite it not being covid I dread going on the train to the office. I have asthma but haven't bothered with the doctors as they always say it's viral

sjxoxo · 13/11/2022 21:21

Have you done a PCR?? My mum had this and all lateral flow tests were negative. She had a PCR and it was positive… x

SkyView · 13/11/2022 21:25

Yes! DH is on Day 21 of a horrible, not-Covid virus. Sore throat, temperature, serious sweating (he's not a sweater usually) & nearly a whole day without urinating. Given a week of penicillin last week, but still sweating, not hungry & hacking chesty cough.

Might try the anti-histamines. Does it matter which ones? Have Loratadine, Cetirizine, plus the drowsy ones Phenergan & Diphenhydramine (Blue Nytol). @BruceAndNosh

Up again coughing I am at the end of my tether with this now. Has anyone found anything at all that has helped at night time? I am barley sleeping and had enough, no chance I can go to work in the morning, I’ve not had a sick day in about 8 years but will be phoning one tomorrow

Thomaslovesalison · 14/11/2022 05:45

Have you seen the other thread about coughing? Conclusion I've drawn is this is probably covid despite negative lfts...

wildthingsinthenight · 14/11/2022 21:01

I'm trying the antihistamine.
Thanks whoever said that

I had earache too, it was awful, eventually turned into sharp pressure pain in my head/face and then that night my ear drum perforated. Saw the doctor who said I have a infection in both ears and my nose/throat lining. Definitely worth going back and seeing someone else if it doesn't go away.

Pholcodine in cough syrup, or codeine in some other form (like OTC co-codamol). It's antitussive (stops coughing). Not good for productive coughs as you need to cough the gunk up (green mucous is not necessarily bacterial infection despite popular belief) but works wonders for stopping the annoying coughing and allowing you to sleep. Sedative effect for some people as well.

wildthingsinthenight · 15/11/2022 22:24

Antihistamine last night made no difference but will continue to take it daily.

As for cocodamol I take this every day for chronic pain so not sure if this is stopping my cough being productive. It certainly doesn't stop the coughing sadly.

Could have written that. Mines the same absolute hell

WuTangGran · 24/11/2022 21:44

All these people desperate to deny it’s Covid when it obviously is.

Vallmo47 · 24/11/2022 21:46

I know this is an old thread but I’ve had the same thing for five weeks and finally been prescribed penicillin- over the phone. I was hesitant about it as not been confirmed bacterial but the GP insisted saying sometimes body needs a bit of extra help clearing things and five weeks is not normal. I mean, I’m thankful something is finally being done. Five weeks of no sleep, constantly feeling chest pain and like something is stuck down there. I hate this season. And no it’s definitely not covid.

Vallmo47 · 24/11/2022 21:49

@WuTangGran I’ve had covid twice and don’t understand why those tests were instantly positive and my three this time were negative… I have no reason to lie about it, it doesn’t bother me in any way if it was covid again, it’s just not. And why on earth is everything covid?? There are SO many other things out there. Is this how we are going to spend the rest of our lives, assuming it’s covid.

Bunnycat101 · 24/11/2022 23:18

I have been coughing up phlegm for about 3 months now. My 3yo now seems to have an awful cough and actually coughed up a load of green gunk into my hand the other day which was grim. I’ve never had a chest infection until this year where I had a bad one in the summer and now just seem to be going and going with productive coughs. Fed up with it now.
