Hand foot and mouth in adults

Hi,

Please be gentle, I've had to get an emergency GP appt, I have bacterial tonsilitis and hand foot and mouth (from my DS's).

So far, tonsilitis has hit its peak and I know what to expect but oh my gosh the hand foot and mouth! It's horrendous.

I have blisters all over my mouth, inside my mouth and tongue and throat and in and around my nose Sad

I've got some on my hands which are fine but it's really bad on my feet.

Does anyone have any tips on how to soothe it or any experience in having it?

I work in A&E on a nursing placement so I won't be able to go in, my temp is still high but the worst part is these weeping blisters.

I have two equally poorly toddlers at home so it's a bit of a battle so please be gentle

I had it a couple of weeks ago.

No advice other than paracetamol and eat yoghurt.

Tomorrowisalatterday · 12/11/2022 15:11

Antihistamines really helped me

ecnatsid · 12/11/2022 15:36

The crusty blisters around my nose are the worst and a painful one on my foot. Bought some yoghurts, haven't dared to eat yet

I has it a few years ago and was shocked how awful it was. I managed to get some relief from the pain on my hands and feet by standing in front of the sink with my feet in a bowl of cold water and my hands in cold water in the sink.

I hope it eases soon.

Literally recovering from this right now so I know exactly how it feels. I think my toddler has it too and he's caught it from nursery and infected me as he has a few tiny red spots here and there but somehow he's absolutely fine and I've had it much worse! The sores on my hands and feet are fading now and don't hurt anymore, although there were only 2 that actually turned into blisters. The GP didn't actually recommend anything so I just took Paracetamol for a few days and drank plenty of fluids and rode it out. With each day the pain got less and less, the sore mouth really is the worst, burning tongue and gums everytime I ate 😭I initially had a telephone appointment with the doctor and she didn't believe it could be hand foot and mouth as it's apparently rare for adults to get sick from it but when I went for the face to face appointment she took one look at my hands and knew straight away. I don't have any other advice I'm afraid but I hope the symptoms start to settle soon.

Hugasauras · 12/11/2022 16:40

Ooh sympathies OP, it's one of the worst things I've had! My entire mouth was a mass of ulcers, I couldn't eat or talk properly. DD on the other hand had three blisters on her hand and that was all!

Hugasauras · 12/11/2022 16:42

I found Iglu helped a little with mouth ulcers but really nothing did much until they healed. Was about four rotten days and then it got better quite quickly.

Pinkbananas01 · 12/11/2022 16:42

Def see your gp, I had to get a 2 long courses of antibiotics + antifungal gel for throat when I had hfm. Hope you feel better soon x

Chloefairydust · 12/11/2022 16:46

Aww no you poor thing, that sounds horrendous 💐

I have never had foot and mouth but I know tonsillitis can be soothed by eating ice lollies, perhaps this might also help the inflammation of the blisters in your mouth too? Also would bonjella stuff help for mouth ulcers?

Hope your feeling better soon x

Evvyjb · 12/11/2022 17:01

I know 2 adults who have had this in the last month, neither with children of their own or in contact with small children... previously have never really heard of it in adults!

ehb102 · 12/11/2022 18:30

Antihistamines, virasoothe and pain killers.. bad luck!

Rainallnight · 12/11/2022 18:32

I had it a few years ago and have never felt anything like it. It’s so awful in adults - I really feel for you. I used painkillers and basically products for chicken pox - ViraSoothe and that sort of thing.

I really hope you feel better soon.

BeastOfBODMAS · 12/11/2022 18:37

I’ve had it recently and all I can say is once it started getting better, it got better really quickly. Until then though…

It's obviously doing the rounds.

I had it, was awful. But tonsillitis as well, you have my sympathy op 💐💐💐

Crunchymum · 12/11/2022 19:10

You poor thing OP. Especially with the tonsillitis too.

DP caught it from our youngest last year and it was the only illness (other than noro a few years ago) that had him off his feet in the 15 years we've been together.

Regular pain relief, soft foods and lots of rest. Is anyone able to help you with the kids?

justasking111 · 12/11/2022 19:15

That's grim OP my seventeen year old son caught it from his nephew. A few days in bed, sipping cold drinks, paracetamol. A couple of weeks later his nails turned a funny colour and became loose. That was an unexpected side effect

ecnatsid · 13/11/2022 07:03

Thanks everyone, my parents are coming to take the kids out for a couple of hours in their car for a drive (something the kids enjoy and it gives them a nap) to give me a break.

The tips of my fingers have like red patches on them like the skin has broken, its really weird but my nose is still the worst I have blisters in and around my nostril, never expected that.

I'm worried about weird side effects happening because I've spent all night on dr google Shock

Hoping to be on the mend asap

I caught it from my baby last year. I couldn’t take anything as we breastfeed so I just suffered through it for a few days.

Think I had honey and lemon hot water.

thesleepyone · 29/11/2024 16:52

I’m so sorry that sounds horrendous. I know this thread has not been posted on in a while but I’m just recovering from it and am starting to worry about the long term consequences. I was lucky enough to not have sores in my mouth but my hands were terrible (I counted 30 sores on one thumb one day) and although the skin has healed it’s still swollen 2 weeks later and I don’t have as much sensation in my fingers as I used to. I’ve also gone deaf in my right ear, which the gp says could be trauma from the virus?? Hopefully will not be permanent but honestly I’d never heard of this horrible disease before and I’m shocked at how terrible it is in adults. GPs are quite dismissive of it too without seeing the evidence and it’s clearly not that rare.

what I found helped was Menthol cream - Dermacool.
