Hi all

I wash my hair every other day and have have really noticed that is now quite greasy on second day.. I'm sure it's down to shampoo so I'm looking for a recommendation. What do you use that keeps hair from being greasy for longer . I know hair type plays is part , happy to spend a bit more . Thanks

I think how frequently you wash it plays a part, so for instance I used to have to wash mine every 4 days but I kept pushing and pushing by an extra day and now it last 7 before it gets greasy.

CombatBarbie · 11/11/2022 21:21

Covid taught me and lots of my friends that hair now needs to be washed every 4 or 5 days 👌 if you can persevere and tie up, you will get longer between washes and the grease will subside

PottyDottyDotPot · 11/11/2022 21:22

i Only put conditioner on the ends and this helps, also don’t try and touch your hair too often.

Thanks all.. 2/3 days would be really pushing it. Washed yesterday morning and is now really greasy.

I find in general the less I wash my hair, the less it needs to be washed. I wash my hair twice a week and it looks fine. I can stretch to a week if I'm happy to keep it tied up. I (loosely) follow the curly girl method and use a shampoo (if using which isn't all the time) and conditioner free of silicones and sulfates.

PottyDottyDotPot · 11/11/2022 21:29

I forgot to say I’m also an every other day washer and definitely couldn’t leave it an extra day.

JamMakingWannaBe · 11/11/2022 21:40

The shampoos generally recommended on these threads and ones I've tried are:

Budget:

  • L'Oréal - Extraordinary Clay
  • Herbal Essence - Daily Detox
  • Vosene

Midrange:

  • Christophe Robin Cleansing Paste

Along with dry shampoo as required.

Others will be along with additional recommendation but the general consensus is to avoid "pearly" shampoo such as Pantene and try something silicone free.

I'm currently trialling a shampoo bar.

Margo34 · 11/11/2022 21:43

I have started using Monday Gentle Shampoo and Conditioner and can now stretch hair washing to every 3 days instead of every 2.

fruitypancake · 11/11/2022 21:45

Oh a brilliant , thank you. Great to have some recommendations x

minticecreamisjustok · 11/11/2022 21:45

I've noticed this recently, a lot of shampoo and conditioners seem to leave a residual which makes it feel greasy, not sure if they've changed ingredients, lack of sulphate probably.

FancyFelix · 11/11/2022 21:57

Loving all the advice from people who don't actually have greasy hair HmmHmmHmm

OP I'm the same, I can stretch it to two days but it feels and looks horrible on day 2. I keep leaving it two days in the hope that this bullshit about hair becoming less greasy if you wash it less often is true, but it really isn't

I find the cheaper shampoos are worse for making my hair get greasy even more quickly.

The ones that I've had recently which have been slightly better are:

Faith in nature tea tree shampoo
Pureology
Kerastase Bain divalent
Charles Worthington long and strong (or something like that)

Dry shampoo at the end of day 1 - before it gets greasy. I try not to use much as I hate the feel of it

I also use an insanely expensive clarifying scrub about once a month, I'll see if I can find a link to it

FancyFelix · 11/11/2022 21:59

It's the Christophe Robin one that a PP mentioned. Interesting that I think it's insanely expensive and they have it as mid range!

Tulips2019 · 11/11/2022 23:19

I second the Vosene suggestion, though I it does have a distinctive smell that I don’t like, it’s one of the few shampoos that works for me. The Body Shop’s ginger shampoo is also good but quite pricey. Avalon Lemon Organic Shampoo is in between the two price wise so I rotate between these three. I have tried so many shampoos over the years to try and get a clean feeling - I find my greasy hair / itchy scalp seems to be aggravated by stress, hormonal changes etc as well.

Rustyhandlebars · 11/11/2022 23:25

As a hairdresser, if your hair is greasy in the roots after 2 days, well there is nothing you can do except blame it on your genetics. Maybe your skin is also greasy?

MarigoldPetals · 11/11/2022 23:27

Shampoo bar and no conditioner. Stick with it. Your hair will be beautiful and soft and a lot less greasy.

Chocchops72 · 12/11/2022 03:00

no conditioner.

the last hairdresser I went to told me that it is a completely unnecessary product, it was invented by fabric softener manufacturers, marketed by Vidal Sassoon, and turned hairdressers into Avon ladies!!

At 69 I figured he probably knew his stuff 😂 so I’ve stopped using it. my hair is good tbh.

i wash daily though, nothing fancy but not bottom of the range either. I couldn’t even go two days without it getting greasy. I get a very itchy scalp sometimes, and treat it with TGel or Selsun.

newfence · 12/11/2022 04:41

I'm a bit gross I suppose but I only wash my hair once a week and it doesn't really get greasy. It does if I'm super lazy and go over the 7-day threshold though. I have short hair though so I don't know if that's a factor? I used to wash my hair every day when I was a teenager and it was in a terrible condition. I definitely think there is something about frequency of washes.

Fleur405 · 12/11/2022 05:17

My hair used to get greasy on day 2 and I had to wash it at least every other day. I started using a sulphate free shampoo which means I don’t need conditioner. It does take an adjustment to wash less frequently (maternity leave during lockdown made that quite easy for me!) but now I can get away with washing my hair every 4 days or so.

Basically the more you wash your hair - especially if you use products with sodium laureth sulfate which completely strip your hair of it’s natural oils - the more you need to wash it. You strip your hair and scalp of oil so your scalp goes into overdrive to produce more. In the meantime you use conditioner which coats your hair with silicone which makes it feel smooth (though it isn’t really) which then builds up and needs to be washed off.

I started using the Maui brand of shampoo which lathers quite well and feels like regular shampoo. Now I use nuddy shampoo bars. Your hair may feel dry/funny after you wash it and to start with you’ll feel you really need conditioner but once you dry it you’ll be surprised how soft it is.

So avoid sulphites and also avoid anything with silicone (dimethicone) in it.

I haven’t used conditioner for about 4 years and I have soft shiny hair that I rarely brush!

StarlightLady · 12/11/2022 05:24

What works for me is regularly changing brands. I never buy the same make twice in a row.

fruitypancake · 12/11/2022 21:02

Thanks all.. some great tips to try x

After a personal recommendation I have stopped using shampoo and conditioner and now use Fairy Liquid. It is supposed to be kind to hands but it’s absolutely wonderful on my hair!

I have long thick hair and my hair looks and feels good and I can go longer without washing it if I have to/want to.

Amoreena · 12/11/2022 21:16

I switched to Childs Farm baby shampoo as perfumed ones were itching my scalp and have found my hair takes longer to get greasy

ineedafairygodmother · 12/11/2022 21:30

It's the production of your hairs natural oils which cause your roots/hair to become greasy, some peoples produce fast, others at a slower rate. When you wash your hair you are washing out the natural oils and depending on how quickly your natural oils are produced will determine how quickly your roots/hair get oily. Sometimes you can slow down the production rate by leaving your hair longer between washes, therefore slowing down the production because you haven't washed the natural oil out so there is nothing to replace.
Have you tried dry shampoo (you can also use talc) this will soak up any oils making your hair look cleaner and less oily so you could try going longer between washes.
If you want to continue washing your hair as normal, I'd try to stick to anything that is made for babies hair (less chemicals and additives) and conditioner only the ends if needed.
Switch shampoos regularly (every end of bottle or 2) as the hair can become used to shampoo and then it no longer does the job required

lady725516 · 12/11/2022 21:31

Wash it less. I used to wash mine every day and now I do mine twice a week and only use olaplex, it's brilliant and last me a long time as you only need a little bit. I do 2 washes each time and I think it makes a difference.
