Warm 'High Street' Coat

I know it's not freezing yet, but hopefully, even only in the interest of climate change it will soon be a bit more normal for the time of year!

I really need a new coat. The type of coat you'd use for school runs, standing at the side of football pitches on a frosty Saturday morning, dog walks, that kind of thing. In the past I've had 'technical coats' think Jack Wolfskin, North Face etc and they have always kept me super warm. Last year, I thought that maybe I didn't need to spend so much and got a puffer coat from Next, I was bloody freezing all winter. But 'technical coats' (is that even the term?!) are ££££.

Surely there must be a halfway house. Not quite so expensive, but still really warm? Any ideas?

For comparison DD has a brilliant coat from Asda, it's the warmest thing ever and was £24, but there's no sign of similar in the adult section!

Something like this:

Or maybe this if you wanted a longer length:

Both reasonable outdoor brands but not the super-expensive ones.

I got a long Parker style one in primark 25 quid ish.
So warm big pockets good size hood.

Spanglybangles · 29/11/2022 16:41

Long quilted/puffa type thing I’d say. They’re everywhere and really warm. I have 2, an Emma Willis full length puffa from Next that I got 2 years ago and the FatFace Harley longline quilted coat. Both are super cosy for dog walking, school run and football training sidelines etc.

I find Seasalt winter raincoats coats (eg plant hunter or Janelle) surprisingly warm for such lightweight coats , and not too £££ (they often have sales on too).

PleaseMrsButler23 · 29/11/2022 16:44

Didn’t mean to say ‘coats’ so many times there!

ihatethecold · 29/11/2022 16:53

TKMaxx has loads of winter coats.

pinkerseal · 29/11/2022 17:01

I got a Roxy Storm Warning water-repellant coat. Fleecy stuff in the hood and all through the coat, plus the hood stays up in the wind.

Lemonademoney · 29/11/2022 17:04

Next? Usually a massive range available there

petalpower · 29/11/2022 17:09

I’d also recommend the Seasalt Plant Hunter coat. Warm and waterproof. I love mine and wear it every day for dog walking.

ForfuckssakeEXHstopbeingatwat · 29/11/2022 17:56

Where are the previous ones? If you're spending £££ on Northface or whatever, why aren't they still in use? Even much cheaper winter coats tend to last me about a decade.

mincepiepie · 29/11/2022 18:11

What's the budget?

Figgyroller · 29/11/2022 18:20

This one is v cozy indeed...FatFace

Decafflatteplease · 29/11/2022 18:33

Another vote for seasalt. I can't remember if mine is plant hunter or Janelle but it's great, not the most ready but super warm and absolutely waterproof. I got mine on vinted

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 29/11/2022 18:35

I got a regatta coat from next. They were selling loads last year and I went back a few weeks later and they were half price!

Eastereggs1 · 29/11/2022 18:40

Uniqlo puffers are amazing and reasonably priced.

I’ve had the short one for a few years and thinking of getting one of the seamless ones this winter.

Didricksons are TOASTY!

TokyoSushi · 29/11/2022 18:52

Oh hello everyone, I thought this was a thread with no replies! 😃

The North Face is about 12 years old and has no feathers at all in some areas, I have a Next Emma Willis but the wind comes right through it, also a Seasalt Janelle which is my Spring & Autumn coat but not warm enough, so I'm looking for warmer than that as a benchmark!

Spanglybangles · 29/11/2022 19:03

@Figgyroller Yes! That’s the one I have. Soooo cosy. @TokyoSushi the FatFace one is warmer than the Emma Willis. Has an area of faux fur lining and lined pockets.

Dilbertian · 29/11/2022 19:14

Lands End. I've got two of their long down coats. Amazingly warm from head to mid-calf. I don't know what the current model is called, but I am very happy with both of mine. One is also waterproof, both are windproof. Even at full price they are not as expensive as many technical coats. But Landsend are always doing sales, so keep an eye out for reductions.

mincepiepie · 29/11/2022 19:15

I got a rab deep cover Parker for £150
Got go outdoors

It's a long down coat.
It feels like I'm wearing a hug so that is a bonus.

spotsmix · 29/11/2022 19:15

Fat face 100%

unvillage · 29/11/2022 19:16

I got this last year and it's super warm.

Ah you see, that's the one I really want, maybe I should just get it!

I would really recommend Tog24. Warmest coat I've owned and reasonably priced too, particularly as I got mine from Vinted.

mincepiepie · 29/11/2022 19:46

@TokyoSushi yes do it!

It's my first proper warm coat after years of cheaper Asda /next / m & s / fat face / tk maxx and it's a prized possession.

My only issue was wondering why I had not bought it when I first saw it two years ago. I'm hoping for 5 years out of it. Daily wear mid nov- mid March.

I found it cheaper on another site and they do a price match plus 10%.
