Blood in urine, should I worry

I think I've had a bladder infection for about a fortnight, but I've stupidly ignored it. This morning I had blood in my urine. Urine is now yellow again but there's blood when I wipe. I don't feel empty after peeing.

I'll ring the gp as soon as they're open. Will they ask for a sample or put me on antibiotics? Has anyone had this? I can't help worrying as blood in urine was first sign my stepdad had cancer of the bladder. Thanks.

Infection can cause blood, espresso if its gone up to your kidneys.
Your doctor will give you antibiotics and also send off a sample to check for bacteria.

Especially, not espresso

MorrisZapp · 11/11/2022 07:55

Wouldn't be surprised if it was espresso! I just want to start the anti bs now, hope I don't have to wait ages. Thanks for answering.

When I was a teenager I got cystitis thanks to a fancy bath oil. (I also got a sore ear from the clip I got for making a horrendous mess in the bath tub from the coloured oil!)

Anyway, I didn’t tell my parents about the burning each time I had a wee but eventually I became quite unwell and there was blood in my urine so after being told my mother took me to the doctors.

I was then reprimanded by the GP for not mentioning it sooner and it has now turned into a kidney infection.

This was in the 70s and I remember him telling me that I had to avoid going out in the sun whilst taking the tablets he described as my skin could turn yellow!

Make sure you get seen to and are prescribed antibiotics if necessary as a kidney infection is very painful.

Oh god was it one of those stupid 'bath perles' that left a creepy skin thingy? I'm currently battling with the gp switchboard.

If you struggle with the go you can usually get antibiotics from the pharmacy for a uti without a px

HoneyPea · 11/11/2022 08:38

I get this regularly except mine goes to blood within a few hours of getting first symptoms. You prob won't even need an appointment, they will ask for a sample and the nurse can treat you with antibiotics in the mean time. Drink plenty of water to try and flush it through your system at the same time. Hope you get through soon.

marmaladepop · 11/11/2022 08:43

I always keep a few sample bottles at home - can order from Amazon. That way you can do one at first sign of symptoms and drop off at GP's reception. No need for appointment and they'll get back to you if necessary. Hope you're ok.

You're all so kind and absolutely correct. Sample and 3 day script. No need to be seen. I'll take first tablet as soon as I can get there. The gp was lovely on the phone, asked lots of questions. Faith restored!

Yes! Some kind of oil combined with purple glitter!

Rinsing the bath did not remove it! I think my poor mum has to spend ages scrubbing away at it with VIM!

Well I feel silly now. I do not have blood in my urine. I'm having a random, one year post menopause period.

I think I also do have a bladder infection because the anti biotics have made it better, also my wee was definitely cloudy.

I'm relieved not to be bleeding from my waterworks, but I'm baffled by the period. Bloating, achy limbs etc very familiar now that I realise what's happening. Hopefully it'll play itself out and won't need further investigation.

Stress might have brought on the period blood and also made you prone to not fighting off the urine infection and needing antibiotics.

Hope you feel better soon.

MorrisZapp · 12/11/2022 13:20

Thank you so much for your thoughts. I feel much better because the blood thing was terrifying, but I feel in control now. Having a wardrobe clearout 😊

I've had blood in my urine from cystitis before. It passes quickly once the antibiotics kick in.
