Injury notes from school

It’s the second time lately I’ve found an injury note from school in my son’s pockets at the end of the day when I’ve emptied his trouser pockets to put them in the wash. Just wondered if anyone knows how school are supposed to pass these home or if, at age 9/year 5, it’s my son’s job? Not sure whether to raise it with them.

DS goes to after school club. Today’s note said, ‘x was accidentally kicked in the head’ (?!) So it hasn’t been handed to after school club for their attention while he was with them, and no one has mentioned it to me. He’s been fine all evening and didn’t mention it at bedtime, but he’s awake on the sofa with an ice pack on his head at the moment as he says it’s hurting.

If anything happens at after school club, they tell me verbally at pick up and I have to sign an injury form to confirm I’ve been told. School are generally shit at communication but just wondered if this is normal.

Our school rings when it's a bump to the head, to say they have put a note in the bag and to explain what happened.
Most other injuries just get a note in the bag though, or occasionally the teacher will say at the door when letting them out.

From Reception age mine were expected to pass the injury form to parents... they went on the school bus so no direct contact. Younger DD was rather proud of her "certificates" so gave them to me without fail!

The time DD left her head injury note at school I got a phone call.

For all injuries or just head injury?

MissAtomicBomb1 · 10/11/2022 23:18

Bump on the head = a phone call. All other messages passed on via the child. Pretty standard In most places I've worked.
I would expect a child upwards of 7yrs to tell me/pass a message on to be honest, certainly of it was something serious enough to warrant my attention otherwise it's probably nothing to worry about.

I wasn’t so bothered about the first note - can’t remember what it was, maybe a scraped knee or something. I think this one bothers me more with it being a kick in the head!

A head injury they call and let you know, fail to answer and they email, and they get a special I bumped my head sticker. Between 3 children I see these every week without fail so I think I've gotten blase about them.

I just find them in his bag when I check it when he gets home. We average one a week

My fave was when dd, aged 7 at the time, came home with a head injury letter in her bag that stated she’d been “punched in the face with force” - and NO ONE had thought or felt it necessary to discuss this with me at pick up🤷🏼‍♀️🙄…..

My sons school send a note home with him which I often miss. The school I work at send a note and a text which is much better.

pimlicoanna · 10/11/2022 23:43

@ofwarren all injuries.

That's really good. I'd much prefer that.

Thanks everyone. Seems like it’s reasonable to hope for a bit more care over head injuries at least.
