Random question, Is it ok to drink water out the bathroom tap?

The BF has man flu so is laid up in bed lol, he asked me to fill up his glass with some water, so turn to go downstairs to the kitchen, and he says just use the bathroom water🤢… So I did but I would never drink bathroom water, and I’m not sure why… I assume it all comes from the same pipes 🤣

So is it just me? Why is bathroom water so unappetising? And is it actually the same as kitchen water? 🤔

Bathroom water is fine

BertieBotts · 10/11/2022 20:09

It's the same as kitchen water. In some older houses you shouldn't drink from the hot tap in the bathroom though as it may have a chance of contamination.

vodkaredbullgirl · 10/11/2022 20:09

It's fine

Some bathroom taps run off a tank so you probably wouldn’t want to drink it as it’s been sitting there. But I don’t know how common it is. We live in a flat and the water is all the same!

Reluctantadult · 10/11/2022 20:10

I love bathroom tap water. It's better. I don't know why I think this, as a kid I used to stick my head under the tap and slurp it!

I wouldn’t fancy drinking water from the hot tap anyway lol

Dh always says not to drink it...we don't have a water tank so it comes from the mains. I tried to get him to explain why but he couldn't really. I drink it if I'm thirsty at night. I'm still here

KozmicBlue · 10/11/2022 20:10

It depends. Some are mains-fed and some are fed from a manky tank in the loft.

motleymop · 10/11/2022 20:12

It's the thought of it that irrationally males me want to retch, but it's the same water!

USaYwHatNow · 10/11/2022 20:12

My parents used to say not to do this as the tank had spiders in it....😂 I now wonder whether it genuinely came from a different tank. I live in a new build now and cba to always go downstairs to top up my glass after feeding my baby so drink from the bathroom tap. Husband also says the above... Reckon he had the same spiel from his parents 😂

I think we must have had a manky tank in the loft growing up as Dad told us not to drink the water in the bathroom.
I'm fairly sure there's a tank in the loft in this house so I wouldn't, but I can't think of when I'd want to really.

Hopesakiller · 10/11/2022 20:13

I grew up in a house where bathroom water came from a tank. Current house bathroom is connected to mains but I'm still convinced it doesn't taste as fresh

LBOCS2 · 10/11/2022 20:14

Depends on the type of system you have. Some bathroom (cold water) taps are fed from a header tank in the loft, which hold water and can be extremely manky. If you know that isn't the case then it's fine to drink the water from the taps; DH tells me off for drinking the cold from our en-suite but given that I coordinated the entire replacement plumbing of our house I am comfortable in knowing where it comes from!

Motherofmonsters · 10/11/2022 20:14

I only drink water from my bathroom tap, it's always colder as it doesn't run through all the pipes in the house first.

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 10/11/2022 20:14

If it's mains fed, it's just like the kitchen tap.
If, like my parents old house, you have a cold water tank in the loft, it's not advisable.

SuburbanMummy123 · 10/11/2022 20:15

In our house bathroom cold water comes from a tank in the loft. Confirmed by a plumber as we also have this debate in my house.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 10/11/2022 20:16

Crazy thing is due to the way my house is plumbed the bathroom tap is first in the system so fresher than the kitchen.

dementedpixie · 10/11/2022 20:20

I have feeder tanks in my loft so the upstairs taps aren't main water fed. I still drink the water though. The tanks have lids so hopefully no pigeons in there 😁

MrsFionaCharming · 10/11/2022 20:21

My parents house has a water softener, which supplies the bathrooms, so that water isn’t drinkable.

Yes for some reason my bathroom water tastes much better than kitchen water!

My parents house has a water softener, which supplies the bathrooms, so that water isn’t drinkable.

I've read that softened water IS drinkable, but not advised for babies, when pregnant and those on a low sodium diet.

We are renovating, and the plumber advised to put a hard water tap in our en-suite for this very reason. If we want a drink at night and don't want to drink the softened water or go downstairs to the kitchen.

Do you have a softener OP?

amylou8 · 10/11/2022 20:27

It depends where the water comes from. My bathroom tap is mains fed and is fine. My partners kitchen tap is mains fed, but his bathroom comes from a tank. I'd been guzzling from it for months before he told me this with no ill effects, but potentially if the tank is contaminated it could make you ill.

alwayscheery · 10/11/2022 20:31

If you have a tank do not drink it .
If it is from the mains it will be fine but run the tap first.

CathyorClaire · 10/11/2022 20:35

We have a cold water tank which I assume feeds the upstairs bathroom taps.

I've guzzled heartily from them for over twenty years and am still here but possibly shouldn't be 😆
