I have made school mornings easier by putting breakfast out

I realise this wouldn't be for everyone, but it's really made a positive difference for us.

Before:
16yo dd moping about saying she can't face breakfast.
14yo ds in the kitchen frying eggs and making a mess.
10yo dd eating her body-weight in sugary crap cereal.

So I changed it a bit and now when everyone gets up (about 20 minutes after me) breakfast is out on the table. I do something different every morning, it's very simple, no choice, just sit down and eat what's there. They love it!

This week was:
M - croissants and jam and milo
T - porridge and fruit
W - brioche toast
Th - Yogurt and fruit
F - Eggy bread

I put out a hot drink, a bottle of OJ or water, and their vitamins.

It takes me 5 minutes, and they clear it all up when they're done. Everyone has been so much more cheerful in the morning. I've been doing it for a few weeks now - I include 5 simple breakfast choices along with my big weekend shop. It hasn't cost any more. The teens have even been getting up to join in breakfast on flexible learning days (when they don't have to be at school).

@TheSilentPicnic So parents who don't lay breakfast out for teens don't love their children?

That’s not what she’s saying at all. In fact some of the other replies to her have been a display of reverse snobbery at their best.

This week it's:
M: Croissants and fruit with Milo
T: Pancakes and blueberries
W: Porridge
Th: Cinnamon toast and mango lassi
F: Scrambled eggs

Still enjoying it.

For me it was when I returned to work and we all had yo leave the house early. I would put the ingredients into the bread maker before going to bed then at 6 next morning, bake the dough. (You can let the bread maker do the baking too, of course, but my kids wanted focaccia which needed oven-ing.)

Scrambled eggs with smoked salmon is very quick. Pancakes I’d have made in the weekend and frozen in batches, and I would precook sausages so they’d just need heating. Time in the morning is so precious!

So they’d have focaccia for lunch with fruit and yoghurt and wotnot.

Thank you! I am thinking when LO gets to school I might start. Maybe not as adventurous as cooking lots of different things but I think I can manage scrambled eggs and crossiants as a treat. I think just having the cereal put out for them is a nice idea

I really need to buy some Milo. I love it.

yesterday we did cornflakes, a smoothie drink and pancakes in the toaster with butter and jam.

Today will be the same but I am planning on buying sausage patties and some muffins for homemade sausage and egg muffins.

@TheSilentPicnic Never read anything so middle class insta mum for a while 😂

Tbf it greatly amused my kids last night and my daughter thought it was very funny to ask me to get up to bake focaccia for her at 6.45 this morning while I was peeling my eyelids apart and injecting black coffee.

ButterflyBiscuit · 15/11/2022 10:09

Mine would hate it if breakfast was chosen for them in a "today its pancakes/whatever" way! It does show we're all different.

I like your thread. It’s nice to have a thread about something that’s working ✅

@BloodAndFire 😂

I don't understand why mum has to lay uniforms out , pack bags, get up early to make kids breakfast. Why can't they be independent and do it themselves?

She doesn’t have to obviously but its working for OP

megletthesecond · 15/11/2022 13:48

funny because when they fail to do it the mum has to pick it the pieces anyway. I still have to do it for my younger teen as she can't cope with it. I just have to hope she can manage when she leaves school.

WinterLobelia · 15/11/2022 14:36

I am sure her kids can do it and can be independent, but the point of the OP is that this is a really nice new change and a nice start to their morning. (FWIW my 12 year old can't get his own breakfast, but there are reasons for that).

It's a bit odd to me that people want to criticise the OP 9and other posters) for doing something lovely and family-oriented in the mornings that she enjoys and which is making things nicer for them all. It's just a chat on a chat forum.

It's more about the posts after that insinuate you don't love your kids if you don't do it, and all the "errr of course, isn't that normal???" Well as this thread proves it's normal to do both!
