What's unmissable in Canterbury?

Will be there for a couple of days next weekend. The weather looks like it'll be vile but I'm hoping to walk to Whitstable if there's a window without too much rain, and will of course check out the cathedral. Other than that, what should I do and, more importantly, eat?

Thanks!

The Corner House restaurant! I've been to the one in Minster and its the best place I've eaten. Absolutely delicious.

I went in a boat trip which I enjoyed, not sure if it runs in winter. Also can recommend a guided walking tour and the cathedral is amazing. Lots of nice independent cafes for breakfast and lunch and restaurants for dinner

www.kudosrestaurant.com/ Fab chinese restaurant.

Don't think the Canterbury Tales still is open. That was reasonably entertaining.

Riverlee · 10/11/2022 12:59

the cathedral

Bramshott · 10/11/2022 12:59

I'd just mooch around, soak up the historic atmosphere, and pop in and out of the lovely shops with lots of different craftspeople's products. Westgate gardens by the river is also nice.

AuntieDolly · 10/11/2022 13:00

There was a lovely hot chocolate café last time I went

Ladyofthelake53 · 10/11/2022 13:30

Greyfrairs , the Pilgrims Hospital, Stour River tour, St Dunstans Church, Roper Gate. ZIzzis in the High Street has some amazing Tudor panelling snd staircase,The Beany Library The Roman Miseum, Canterbury Tales. I can recommend Cafe Mauresque which is In Butchery Lane. St Augustines abbey. I live locally

Hotchick1972 · 10/11/2022 13:37

I second the corner house restaurant
you can walk the crab and winkle way into Whitstable

Alarae · 10/11/2022 13:39

Korean Cowgirl is amazingly tasty.

shufflestep · 10/11/2022 13:42

St Augustine's Abbey, St Dunstan's church, the Roman museum, the Beaney and a river trip. I also recommend Cathedral evensong, beautifully sung. We like eating at Cafe du Soleil, Cafe des Amis, the Ambrette and the veg box cafe for lunches.

The Foundry apparently does gin/beer tours I think, the Kings Mile has some ok shops as does the bottom of town by the Westgate Towers (think the Towers museum is still open). The rest of the High Street from the Beaney up is like anywhere really....vape shops and empty shops.
The Canterbury Tales closed a couple of years ago but of course there is the cathedral if you're into stupidly priced things to do. Creams is good for desserts, Tiny Tim's on St Margaret's Street is good for afternoon tea, A la Turka is good for Turkish food (between Canterbury West Station and Westgate Towers).

The Chrsitmas market starts this weekend though usually pretty rubbish.
If you don't end up walking to Whitstable there is a good bus service and you could walk from Whitstable to Herne Bay via the shops/cafes in Tankerton.

Cocktails in the abode hotel bar.
And food in the pound is nice and it's fun I think it's old police cells.

Caspianberg · 10/11/2022 15:25

Tiny Tim’s tearoom

Snoopsnoggysnog · 10/11/2022 15:28

We stayed at the abode hotel and the restaurant was terrible! The bar looked ok though.
Whitstable was charming. Loved walking around Canterbury but it was summer and lovely weather.

RobertJohnsonsShoes · 10/11/2022 18:31

Cafe St Piere is lovely. Towards Westgate near Nando's. Has a little courtyard out the back and it's divine.

Riverlee · 10/11/2022 19:35

Leeds castle

if you want a slight detour, just saw that Leeds Castle (near Maidstone) are having a Christmas shop. May be worth visiting - you don’t need tickets to go, although Leeds castle is lovely as well.

tobee · 10/11/2022 23:13

The Goods Shed restaurant which also has bakery, butchery and food hall, farmers market. Right by Canterbury West station

QuimReaper · 14/11/2022 14:19

Brilliant, thanks tobee, that's right next to where I'm staying!

It's my local city. Probably sounds awful but I'd be hard pushed to say anything is 'unmissable', particularly in miserable weather but it is worth a walk around the cathedral quarter of the city and westgate gardens which are very pretty - slightly wrong time of year to see any of it at it's best and there are usually a number of male drinkers/homeless dotted around the parks that surround the city which can be a bit offputting when the parks are quiet and you are alone. I would recommend in particular avoiding Dane John Gardens after dark or approaching it just to be on the safe side, advice given to me multiple times by locals when I mentioned I was in the city centre.

The Goods Shed is really nice, Cafe Des Amis if you like mexican, Il Posticino for Italian, The Veg Box cafe if you're vegan, Tiny Tim's Tea Room is also nice for a tea and cake. The Christmas market has started up in the city centre already I believe, near Whitefriars (the main shopping area).

If it's something that interests you then Evensong at the Cathedral is free and a nice experience, the Canterbury River tour punting is also fantastic but I'm not sure if they operate in bad weather. Last minute tickets at the Marlowe if anything showing takes your fancy. There is also a new Curzon cinema complex that I've not been to but hear is lovely.

I assume you do a lot of walking/hiking if you are planning to do the walk from Canterbury to Whiststable as it's a fair trek. If you decide not to do the walk back there's a direct bus from whitstable harbour to canterbury that takes about 30 mins, or the train of course. Whistable is nice for a wander and has a lovely bookshop.
