I feel like an awful human being

I’m struggling to make ends meet, despite being on 30,000 a year. My mortgage has just risen to 850 a month and with my other outgoings I’m only left with 205 a month for everything else including petrol, food, savings, socialising, MOT. There’s just me. I work in an industry where you can’t have overtime or work any extra hours.

I’ve got my bills down to as little as I can. I’ve asked for WFH days, I’m using my brothers Netflix! I’ve changed phone contracts to a sim only. I’m eating super noodles a lot for most meals and I’ve not put the heating on once, despite being bitterly cold.

Anyways, I’ve started working as a chat operator psychic. It gives me an extra 250/300 a month for 3 hours a night . I don’t pretend to talk to the dead as such, but I do pretend to read tarot (mostly getting it from online). I also refuse to talk about medical things so It’s essentially just giving relationship advice (90% of my questions are relationship based)

I did look for evening jobs in my area but there weren’t any and this seemed easy as I can do it from home.

I feel such guilt though that I’m considering quitting, however I really need the money. I’m about to log on now and am feeling that moral sinking dread.

Oh, and if anyone is thinking of using the text services, don’t. Everything you text from your number is saved and comes up when you text again. So anyone working on the lines can see your precious conversations, replies and everything. So while there are some people who might think, “wow! I said to someone 6 months ago that I was unhappy in my job, and now they have brought it up unprompted!” it’s because you scroll back and look.

But again, if someone doesn’t read the small
print that it’s just for entertainment then what can you do?

Its all perfectly legal as long as they make it clear that it’s just for fun.

*previous conversations. Christ, I am going for a nap.

Your providing a service. Nobody is forced to use these services. It's not compulsory. People who use this obviously feel it helps them in some way so don't feel bad or guilty about it. Don't quit just because the MN peale clutchers are having a go at you!!

No she isn't. She isn't psychic, she's lying .

Sartre · 10/11/2022 12:30

meh, they’re stupid enough to pay for it so don’t feel guilty.

They are all lying.

If they did have actual psychic abilities (or were just better at acting), then they would be making a pittance on the phone lines.

But again, it’s made clear that it’s just for entertainment - not real.

It’s absolutely morally fine from my point of view- in fact I’d love to know the company too as could really use the financial help.

Chattycathydoll · 10/11/2022 12:36

I did this for 6 months after my ex left. It is really counselling for people who wouldn’t go to counselling.

No it’s not, don’t be so ludicrous, none of these people are counsellors or qualified to act as one. There is bigging yourself up and then there is this.

didnt mean it in a complimentary way. Meant they didn’t give us the training to deal with the issues we had to discuss! These people SHOULD have been in counselling. Instead they phoned psychics.

If op was working from some darkened room pretending to talk to some dead relatives and predicting the future, of course she would be morally wrong. These people don’t put disclaimer’s that it’s all for fun, instead they con you so not only do you go back your convince your mates to go back. They charge a lot more for the privilege as well.

An acquaintance went to one years ago. Absolutely raved about how good they were and went back way too many times. Dragged me along at one point but for some bizarre reason needed my contact details - phone, address and email - gave a number and email I rarely use.

Had to sit and watch the scammer trying to read my facial reactions and giving me a load of bollocks info about people I didn’t have a clue who they were on about and someone else’s life.

found out afterwards acquaintance was paying £120 for 30 minutes when they ranted to me that I had cost them money due to not getting the referral discount.

My favourite ones are the “psychics” on facebook. Where you friend them on there first.

I mean, come the fuck on, who falls for
that? I could friend you on facebook right now and in half an hours time, I bet you would phone me and tell me things with amazing accuracy!

YukoandHiro · 10/11/2022 13:59

Don't feel bad about it. Using those lines is a tax on idiocy.

YukoandHiro · 10/11/2022 13:59
