Is your heating on yet?

In the Midlands and it's thankfully still quite mild, so far I'm fine with a jumper and blanket in the evening. Trying to be mindful of our energy use, like so many people.

If I'm honest i have an extra incentive to avoid the central heating as it tends to flare up my rosacea, but wondering how long others plan to avoid putting the heating on for?

No, not yet. The only one of us suffering is skinny coated dog, she gets into bed and sulks.

BonesOfWhatYouBelieve · 09/11/2022 20:39

We haven't needed it during the day but we have it on for half an hour at around 3am in a desperate attempt to help our 5 month old sleep better, just in case she was getting cold.

troppibambini6 · 09/11/2022 20:40

Yes mine is on but I'm being more mindful.

Same all year round, set to 18° for a couple of hours in the morning and a few hours in the evening, 13° during the day and overnight. It's come on a few times, mainly in the mornings so far.

TroysMammy · 09/11/2022 21:01

I put mine on on Monday to warm myself up to do some housework (I go into hibernation mode of too cold and nothing gets done). After it was on for an hour I had to turn it off as I was boiling.

AverageMillennial · 09/11/2022 21:01

North Yorkshire, rural. It’s gone in most days (not for long each time though) since mid-October.

SavingsThreads · 09/11/2022 21:02

London, nope not on yet at all.

Have got a heated blanket for wfh though!

Fiddledeedeeee · 09/11/2022 21:02

I’ve blasted the heating twice so far, once to dry the house out after we got the carpets cleaned and had terrible condensation everywhere the next morning and once to help dry washing.
We have had the log burner on a few evenings though and it takes the chill out of the whole house if doors are kept open.

namechangersunite · 09/11/2022 21:04

Nope still 21° here thanks to nextdoor loving their heating and mild temperatures outside.

toastedcat · 09/11/2022 21:09

Had it on since October, fairly regularly. Have a newborn baby so think it's essential for us.

megletthesecond · 09/11/2022 21:10

Yes. Hampshire and its on 20°. I was getting so cold.
I think my house is naturally cold as it doesn't get much sun. My old house would be so hot in winter as the back was a sun trap.

glamourousindierockandroll · 09/11/2022 21:12

I've put ours on as it's been so wet and the house just was feeling cold and damp.

It's on a timer so just for a few hours a day.

Spectre8 · 09/11/2022 21:12

No bot yet, almost did yday bit took myself off to the gym. Have friends staying over this weekend dont think ill get away without turning it on ...doh

SuperlativeOxymoron · 09/11/2022 21:14

Not on yet, but may have to do it soon because clothes are taking 3 days to dry rather than half a day. House is 18.5° so still fairly mild. Jumper and blanket are enough for an evening.

RoseBucket · 09/11/2022 21:15

Not yet, not cold yet.

zurala · 09/11/2022 21:15

Yes of course it is, it's been on for weeks. Thermostat at 21/22.

DGUp · 09/11/2022 21:18

No. I have no intention unless I need to. However, weekends I abs will if I need to...I'm at work full time .
Electric blanket. Hot water bottles. Wrap up warm. TV in bedroom😁.
My babies are all grown so we can always save by staying over at each others houses 🏘 🙌 😌 ☺ 🤗 🙏🏻 to elevate the costs and spend quality time together.
Strip wash, quick showers, bulk cooking etc, all helps to lower costs and of course doing the leg work and deals on line google to compare prices. Shop in different stores not just one store . It's worth it...off topic slightly but all part of saving money !
Oh, and walk rather than car or public transport where possible 🤔 xxx

MiniTheMinx · 09/11/2022 21:22

South east here, yes the heating is on. I have it set to constant and have set the thermostat to 19.

I have a weird theory about gas usage, could be completely wrong though!

If the house is warm, and the house is fairly well insulated (ours isn't brilliant) and the boiler only ever cuts in to top up the temp by a degree or so then the boiler doesn't cut in for very long at all. If you have to heat the house from say 15 degrees to 20 the boiler will have to be fired up for much longer. So, with this in mind it seems pointless to me to allow the house to get colder than I want it to be, and pointless to set the thermostat much lower because heating the house from say......15 to 18 would probably use the same amount of gas as heating it from 17 to 20. Anyone know? its puzzling me.

VeronicaFranklin · 09/11/2022 21:27

Yep we live in countryside and my heating is on, 4 month old baby, old house with big rooms, need to keep temp about 16 degrees for baby. I use mixture of heating and electric fire.
We also have a log burner which has been lit 2/3 times.

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 09/11/2022 21:40

Yes. The house regularly dropped to 14C.
Now the heating is on an hour first thing, and an hour just before the kids get home. It's much more pleasant at 18C.

KangarooKenny · 09/11/2022 21:44

I have because some of my washing just isn’t drying, it’s still damp when I’m putting it away. Also, DD is studying in her room, and she’s cold.

Stripyhoglets1 · 09/11/2022 21:46

Yes on and off since October. Switched it to be on longer in the evenings since 1 Nov as house was getting damp and unpleasant.
Still using it less than previous years and this crisis has escalated plans to re-insulate the loft soon.

AndyWarholsPiehole · 09/11/2022 21:47

Ours is on most of the day (WFH) at 22 and has been for the past couple of weeks. Thermostat is set at 17 overnight.

primeoflife · 09/11/2022 21:48

Yes because when we came back from being away our house was really damp and needed the heating on or it would start to get mouldy
