What's a reasonable company car allowance?

If people don't mind sharing? What sort of allowance is reasonable towards a car instead of being given a company car?

It would be working for a large international company above graduate level. Middle to senior management type role. Cash provided as travel is required as part of the job rather than as a benefit.

Also, is such cash taxed as income tax or BIK? I assume taxed as income?

Is it reasonable to expect the amount to change with inflation? (I know, dream on, but if I took out a car loan, would that change?)

This is all new to me!

£5.5k wfh no travel.

Income tax but realised this year it's not increased as it doesn't get pay rise % added to it.

Benefit in kind will apply to your car - the purchase value when new - so it doesn't depreciate...so I wouldn't expect your car allowance to remain steady The cash alternative income is charged at a normal tax rate.

I’d expect anything from 4.5k-7.5k. I get 6k.
Taxed as income.
It won’t go up with inflation. Every now and again, the company will review the amount so it may increase (eg For a more competitive benefits package). Or it may decrease (eg company merger - standardising benefits). But it will remain the same monthly payment generally.

Pay rises, bonuses, pension contributions are calculated on base salary without car allowance but car allowance is paid during Mat leave.

My DH gets company car, on his P60 it shows as £5k plus he gets petrol reimbursed

snowflake29 · 09/11/2022 21:07

I get 5k just paid same as salary, hasn't changed in 10 years though!

Teenytinyvoice · 09/11/2022 21:07

Mine is 6k, taxed via PAYE, and as far as I recall has never gone up in the whole 10 years I’ve been eligible…

Teenytinyvoice · 09/11/2022 21:09

Although one up side is if you take maternity leave, it’s a benefit and they don’t stop the payment. Of course this may not be relevant but it was a nice surprise for me

In my organisation it’s £2600pa max, and decreases the higher your car’s CO2 emissions. If your car’s emissions are higher than the limit, you don’t get any allowance! You would still be able to claim mileage though (if you aren’t entitled to a car allowance you don’t even get paid mileage🙄)

WaddleAway · 09/11/2022 21:13

I get £4.5k but I work from home and my role has no travel, so it’s just a benefit.

CMOTDibbler · 09/11/2022 21:17

I get £5.7k per year before tax. It hasn't gone up in many years and we were told today it wouldn't be going up though they are reviewing the lease plan amount for those that opt for an actual company car.
