Council housing applications

So I’ve no idea how my local authority works, I’ve just moved here. Anyways I was assaulted not long after I moved here (long story that I’d rather not discuss). I have many services involved for myself and children due to the nature of the assault. Now I’ve looked at a housing application because I’m paying over 200.00 extra in rent a month, the private housing market is shocking at the moment and have questioned due to the man who assaulted me living near me and being a risk. So many have deemed it a risk of domestic abuse would I qualify for housing help. I obviously want to move due to feeling unsafe but I’m stuck in a tenancy agreement until March. I dread moving again but I just cannot stay here and also the cost of the extra rent is really getting to me. I had to pay 280.00 extra last month just to change the date my rent is paid by a week (to fall in line with universal credit payment date). I know it may not seem like a lot but I’m receiving a very low amount as it is so it’s left me looking at food banks because of this.

Yes you can apply. You will still be liable for your rent untill your contracts ends with your currently landlord even if you get rehoused unless he agrees to let you break the tenancy early.

You really need to speak to womens aid and your local council.

Where abouts in the country are you?

Waiting lists are very long in some places, less so in others.

Any body can apply wether you would be deemed priority or not would be up to the council ,regarding how long you would wait ,depending on what part of the country you are in it could be years .
You need to find out how it woeks in your LA and how long the average wait is .

Anybody can apply for council housing. The local authority decide your level of need based on your circumstances and put you in a "band" ranging from A-D, with A being highest priority. You can then bid on properties. Some have longer waiting lists than others, depending on what band you are in the waiting list can be years. I got a HA flat 14 years ago, I was living in a hostel with DC for a few months first.

You may want to check whether there’s a minimum residency period for how long you’ve had ties there. Typically lived in the LA, employed there or have family ties. Otherwise you may not be eligible at all
