Horse riders - help with jodhpurs for DD please

BabbleBee · 09/11/2022 09:04

DD’s 15th birthday is just around the corner. She has learning disabilities and has started riding lessons as part of her therapies. She loves it and is something we intend to continue long term.

I want to get her some jodhpurs / riding clothes for her birthday but not sure what to get. I’m leaning towards Decathlon warm leggings or some with a silicone seat so she feels nice and secure in the saddle.

Budget is about £40-£50 for all of her gifts so anything under that enabling me to get her something else too would be great. Any recommendations please?

I recently replaced my ancient jodphurs and bought some Ariat riding tights with silicon seat and knee areas. They felt quite thin when I bought them and I was a bit sceptical but they are a revelation. No thick waistband or zip, super stretchy comfortable and very easy to get on and off. Ariat are possibly a bit above your budget but there are plenty of similar styles out there. I would definitely get some made for purpose jodphurs though, rather than leggings.

mateysmum · 09/11/2022 09:18

Oh and yes to how wonderful riding is for those with disabilities. The horses seem to know to be calm and gentle and I hope your DD continues to get lots of pleasure and benefits from it.

chisum · 09/11/2022 09:21

A lot of my day to day jodhpurs came from Aldi. They do equestrian special weeks. Worth keeping an eye out for those

I bought my daughter a pair of these for Christmas last year - they've worn and washed so well. Full gel seat and so cheap, leaves you lots spare for other bits 🙂

@mateysmum Ariat tick all of the boxes other than budget - good to look at them though to look for what I want in other brands. DD has been using equine assisted learning for a long time, but that never involved being in the saddle. After her first ride she told me that she felt free…. I cried! Such a wonderful gift to be able to give her respite from her problems.

@chisum great tip, thanks! I’ll keep an eye out.

@Iamclearlyamug thank you for the link, they’re a great price!

Riding tights seem to be the latest thing. The Ariat ones are supposed to be good

IndigoSkye · 09/11/2022 09:34

Hi, my girls love this brand, they are more expensive than the other ones linked but I think in terms of equestrian brands they are good value

countrygirl99 · 09/11/2022 09:38

Decathlon are usually good value for money. Generally riding tights are more comfortable than breeches. Mine are Aubrion which were £42 and have a silicon seat

GOODCAT · 09/11/2022 09:38

Definitely get riding tights with a grippy seat. They are far more comfortable than jodhpurs.

horseymum · 09/11/2022 09:41

Gs equestrian riding tights are great. You might get a new subscriber discount, they also donate to RDA, so a good company to support. The pull on tights with grippy seat are good, my dd just uses ladies sizes to get them long enough as she's tall and slim.

BabbleBee · 09/11/2022 09:47

@horseymum DD is the same - tall and skinny. She towers over me now, which she finds very funny. She will need a ladies 6, possibly a 4 depending on the brand.

@GOODCAT tights with grip it will be. Not sure of the difference between tights and jods but as long as they’re comfortable and she doesn’t need to keep pulling them up I don’t care what they’re called haha!

@countrygirl99 I’ll look at the brand, thank you.

Agree with riding tights rather than jodhpurs.
If you’ve got an independent equestrian supplies place near you they will have a good selection.

countrygirl99 · 09/11/2022 10:03

Those look like the ones I have but a better price (mine were an emergency purchase at a local store due to a zip failure!). I can confirm the seat is grippy. If you don't buy winter weight leggings a pair of tights underneath is good on colder days and saves you buying a lighter weight come summer.

alloalloallo · 09/11/2022 10:09

I also agree with riding tights rather than Jodhpurs.

My DD has some disabilities and sensory issues and used to prefer to ride in leggings than jodhpurs until I bought her riding tights.

No annoying seams, not thick and bulky, pocket for her phone

Shes got a couple of pairs in the link above.

Although, I did buy her an Ariat pair for her birthday and they are hands down the most comfortable, best quality pair she’s ever owned. I found the large children’s sizes are about the same as the smaller adult sizes and about half the price.

BabbleBee · 09/11/2022 10:45

These? I can’t find the combination of winter with silicone seat in budget…

If your daughter is happy to I would just put on a pair of opaque tights under normal weight. I rode like that Sunday in a cold wind and was comfortably warm. Will your daughter be riding in an indoor school? That makes a big difference in winter.

Camesawconquered · 09/11/2022 11:26

My daughter likes these:

fuzzwuss · 09/11/2022 11:30

I bought the Decathlon riding tights recently for dd (women's not children, she is 12) , and was very pleased. They are stretchy and light, with nice grippy silicone bits.

fuzzwuss · 09/11/2022 11:32

I also think that tights, or more layers on top would be ok for winter. Dd does not have winter weight riding tights.

Also, I thought the sizing on the Decathlon tights, was perhaps a little smaller than normal.

BabbleBee · 09/11/2022 13:04

I don’t think she’ll tolerate two layers - sensory issues especially with tights and toes!

They’re in the school and outside depending on weather. The centre don’t make too many demands on the riders so they don’t go out in all weathers.

Thank you for all the replies.

Rydale is pretty good for riding wear, or my preference is shires aubrion. The shires are really comfortable and they do matchy matchy sets as well. They are a bit more expensive than rydale but worth the spend for me. And definitely tights instead of jodphurs.

Looksonthebrightside · 09/11/2022 13:18

I'd also recommend riding tights as they are more comfy and easier to get on. I wear summer riding tights all year round and just make sure my top half is layered up in the winter. Those tights that you have linked to would be good although I prefer tights with less of a band around the top as they are more comfy. But it doesn't sound like your daughter has any excess fat or skin on her stomach so she probably won't have a problem with the waist band being
uncomfortable.

BabbleBee · 10/11/2022 12:47

Sorry, me again. I’m so indecisive…

Has anyone used this website / brand please?

I get my clothing from Decathlon and they have lasted quite well.

I also buy from Riders and Squires in Kensington if I want something a bit fancier (I got my hat and gloves from there).
