First time on a plane next week...thinking of cancelling

I'm 30 and never flown before.
I'm going away next Thursday with 3 friends (all flown before ) to lanzarote.
I'm terrified of take off on a plane.
I've heard it feels weird /makes you dizzy etc etc
I don't think I can do it
Can anyone tell me how it feels ?
What it's like?
Like a rollercoaster feeling ?

Its a very fast acceleration for a minute or so to get off the runway. As soon as you are in the air, it doesn't feel as fast.

You may feel the pressure in your ears. Sucking a sweet or holding your nose and blowing helps.

On landing it can be a bit bumpy... completely normal than a fast deceleration.

Enjoy.

Lentilweaver · 09/11/2022 09:08

You can do it especially if you have friends. I have friends who are nervous about flying, and they take anxiety meds just for the flight. speak to your GP?

The take off feeling is a little unsettling but get your friends to hold your hands tight and you can do it.

Afterfire · 09/11/2022 09:08

I’ve flown loads of times. It doesn’t make me feel anything really! Not dizzy etc. Never heard of anyone feeling dizzy. Sometimes it can give you a small earache on landing. But that’s about it!

It's nothing like a rollercoaster feeling. It feels much safer and more secure. Taking off is a bit weird the first couple of times. There's a fast acceleration and it's quite loud but it doesn't feel fast or jolty like a rollercoaster.

The plane turning is quite strange but you get magnificent views.

Don't cancel!

Sprogonthetyne · 09/11/2022 09:10

It's really not that bad, to me it feels kind of like being a passages in a car that's driving a little to fast through a rural hilly area, like the lake district or dales. Occasionally your ears pop, but swallowing hard usually fixes that, and once you're in the sky (takes at most 5 minutes) it levels out and you barely notice.

allboysmum3 · 09/11/2022 09:11

I'm afraid of flying even though I've probably been on about 20 planes. My fear has never stopped me going abroad. It is totally worth it. Once the plane has taken off you don't feel anything. It's smooth and a great experience. If you don't do it now then you'll likely never do it. Be brave, and go enjoy yourself. You'll be forever disappointed if you bail.

Cheeseandlobster · 09/11/2022 09:11

The only time it makes you slightly dizzy is when it turns which usually happens pretty soon after take off. But that only lasts seconds. Don't let this fear ruin what will be a lovely holiday. Your imagination is making it seem far worse than it is

SalviaOfficinalis · 09/11/2022 09:15

Don’t cancel!

I wouldn’t say it makes you dizzy, it’s just a slightly strange sensation just for a couple of seconds - like when you go down lots of floors in a lift.

Nothing like a rollercoaster at all, I hate them - this is much much more tame.

ScrambledOrPoached · 09/11/2022 09:15

I don’t know that it feels weird.

they don’t go that fast - about 150mph and once you’re past the acceleration you don’t really feel it.

the only ‘weird’ bit is after the initial take off, they retract the landing gear and then they bring the nose down to decrease the rate of ascension and slow down the speed as they’re up and away from the runway. This happens quite quickly after take off, and it can feel like you’re sinking but you’re not.it lasts a few seconds. Not long after is when the stewardesses get up but you have to remain seated. It takes around 20 minutes to get to cruising altitude

Pootles34 · 09/11/2022 09:17

It's nothing like a rollercoaster, I hate rollercoasters and I'm ok with flying. You can tell it's going really fast, but it's not scary. It is a bit loud, but not too bad. Honestly if it was that bad people wouldn't do it all the time. It certainly doesn't make you feel dizzy - and I get dizzy at the drop of a hat.

Focus on what a great time you're going to have.

SuperCamp · 09/11/2022 09:17

It is nowhere near a rollercoaster feeling!

And doesn’t make you feel dizzy.

The plane taxis slowly to the end of the runway, and then starts to accelerate fast for take off. You can hear the engines get louder but it is a deafening roar or anything. It does feel very fast for a short while but is smooth. It isn’t always possible to tell when the wheels actually leave the ground.

The plane dips slightly sideways to attain its direction away from the airport and then gains height until cruising height. None of this is extreme in anyway.

You have never seen a passenger plane in RL or film tip like a rollercoaster, have you?

Because they don’t.

And remember countless small children who aren’t allowed on big roundabouts fly without being alarmed or finding it scary.

Focus on your packing, and enjoy your holiday.

MermaidEyes · 09/11/2022 09:17

It can make you feel dizzy if you don't travel well, so you could take some travel sickness tablets if you think that might help. Kwells and Stugeron are both good.

ScarlettOHaraHamiltonKennedyButler · 09/11/2022 09:17

It is nothing like a rollercoaster. My DC recently flew for the first time at 9 and 6, they were absolutley terrified before getting on the plane but they actually loved it. I love flying so much I find it very relaxing, I didn't fly until my twenties.

Take lots of things to distract you, books/music etc. download some films onto your phone or tablet.

My Dad flies all the time although he is terrified because he thinks it is worth it to get to where he is going.

It will be fine op. Enjoy your holiday.

SuperCamp · 09/11/2022 09:17

ISN’T a deafening roar

ForestDad · 09/11/2022 09:18

Hi OP, don't worry you're not alone. I'm a pilot and we see a lot of nervous fliers.
Could you confide in your friend(s) about your fears and ask them to tell you what's happening if they are frequent fliers? The airport experience can be jading to the most experienced travellers.
If you're still feeling bad when you get to the plane mention it to the cabin crew, they should be sympathetic (depending which airline and how late they are!). Sometimes I've had a chat to nervous pax, I haven't had a refusal at the aircraft yet.
A lot of people take something to calm them whether it's herbal, prescribed or the ol' favourite, a glass of wine or two. Bear in mind you won't be allowed to fly if drunk and prescription drugs don't mix well with alcohol which also has a greater effect with altitude.
If feels a lot like being in a coach I'd say, sometimes the road/air is smooth and sometimes it's a bit bumpy. Very occasionally it's turbulent enough for us to make everyone strap in but probably only 1 in 10 flights for a short period this Summer.
Before takeoff make sure you have a sick bag or two handy just in case it gets too much. Being sick into a bag is not great but much better than being sick all over your friends at the start of a 3hr flight!
Good luck!

Uninterestedfamily · 09/11/2022 09:18

Never heard of anyone getting dizzy or feeling weird, but I guess if people are anxious it can cause that. But it's not the actual flight.

It's nothing at all like a roller-coaster.

You just feel acceleration. Like if someone goes heavy on the accelerator in the car, you feel pushed back into your seat. That's it. Takeoffs

ChickinBell · 09/11/2022 09:18

Look at the air stewards , that will reassure you. They sit there laughing and chatting on take off and landing
You may hear the engines make noises but that's normal. Take a kindle to distract you
I always save a book I'm desperate to read for the flight so I'm almost gagging to get on
Have a lovely holiday @packupyourtroublesss

TwoRockSalmonAndAHaporthOfChips · 09/11/2022 09:20

I’m not scared of flying but I do get very travel sick, so this is what puts me off. But a couple of Kwells means I’m never sick. Take off feels like fast acceleration, and can feel like you’ve left your stomach behind for a moment - but it lasts such a short time that it’s over before you realise. Don’t be put off. The first time I flew my best friend held my hand till we were up, because I was nervous. The others will look after you, and you have a wonderful holiday to look forward to!

SuperCamp · 09/11/2022 09:20

Once you are in the air it doesn’t even feel fast. Just smooth and relaxing.

WinterLobelia · 09/11/2022 09:21

I don't like flying much but take off is my favourite bit! it just accelerates really hard and it feels so exciting!

Please dont cancel. Maybe see your GP about anti anxiety meds as suggested but I think once you do it and have the wonderful prize of a lovely holiday at the end you will be fine.

Take sweets for the landing as the descent can hurt the ears or try these.

I recommend earplanes every chance I get because they have been a total gamechanger for one of my Dcs who has sensory issues. They have them for adults as well.

Branleuse · 09/11/2022 09:21

I love takeoff. The plane speeds up on the runway and then all of a sudden youre in the air and can watch the ground getting smaller. Its exciting.
Id ask for valium for the flight since youre nervous, but its not like a rollercoaster at all

Thisonetoday · 09/11/2022 09:21

I’m a really nervous flier but I still get on the plane because honestly it’s never as bad as I think and that feeling when you land at your holiday destination is amazing! Don’t cancel, you’ll be so proud of yourself for doing it and it does get a bit easier even if you’re still nervous. I always have a couple of wines at the airport just to take the edge off. Have a lovely holiday 😁

HolidayHappy123 · 09/11/2022 09:21

Have a look on Flightradar24. It will show you how many planes are in the air right now. There are thousands. With hundreds of thousands of passengers on them. Each of those passengers will be just fine coping with any 'funny feelings' from flying and all will arrive at their destinations safely.

I used to be scared of flying and CBT helped. Just because you feel afraid doesn't mean you are not safe.

Enjoy your trip.

CrapBucket · 09/11/2022 09:23

You've had lots of flying advice and reassurance, can I just add that Lanzarote is absolutely lovely! You will have a wonderful time x

Uninterestedfamily · 09/11/2022 09:23

Takeoff itself, bit of vibration from the wheels on the runway, same as you feel vibration in a car. Then as you leave the runway, it's suddenly all very smooth.

It's the most fun part of flying, for me. Ex used to be nervous and pretend to be asleep till we were in the air. Everyone's different, but the reality is very different to what you are imagining. You'll kick yourself if you drop out.
