The Crown - series 5 - who’s the actor speaking to Diana in first ep?

Decided to have a quick peek whilst getting ready this morning but this is driving me absolutely mad . I recognise the actor speaking to Diana in her first scene in first episode, but can’t place him at all, he’s the actor that says to her about the papers calling it a second honeymoon . I know him from somewhere but can’t get it !

I love Johnny Lee Miller but he's not good as John major either 😕

Oh I think he's great!

Episode 2 about the Fayeds can be skipped in its entirety. What a load of absolute twaddle.

Or was it episode 3. Anyway. Complete twaddle.

Natasha McElhone. She's been in a lot of films and tv series over the years. Sadly she lost her husband in the late 00s while she was pregnant.

She was in the Truman Show.

I think she is breathtakingly beautiful.

She really is @WinterLobelia, those sculptured cheekbones!

I think Jonny Lee Miller is great as John Major! Really subtle and sweet performance. Jonathan Pryce is just playing the same role he always plays, with his normal voice. Tobias Menzies and Matt Smith at least made an effort to copy Philip's mannerisms, tone and clipped syllables.

GoonerGirl5231 · 10/11/2022 18:32

I also like Olivia Williams – Bruce Willis' wife in The Sixth Sense – as Camilla. It took me ages before I worked out it was her!

SuperPug · 10/11/2022 18:34

Definitely think the cast is “off” this time - Anne and Charles were spot on before. Not keen on Jonathan Pryce as Prince Phillip at all. Definitely the weakest series and could have been the best

KillingMeDeftly · 10/11/2022 18:52

I don't think JLM or Olivia Williams look anything like John Major or Camilla in real life but the hair and makeup team have done wonders!

On episode 4 and finding it pretty boring.

None of the representations are really landing, except maybe Diana. Was really looking forward to this one.

I feel like Dominic West is just playing Dominic West; he isn’t even trying to portray Charles’ voice of mannerisms. I’m only on ep1 though, so I’ll give him a chance

He does t get any better. Poor effort I thought.

KillingMeDeftly · 10/11/2022 20:34

I don't know what you mean he's the image of Charles...!

GoonerGirl5231 · 10/11/2022 20:39

I've just finished bingeing it and found the whole series dull. It lacks the historical context and charm of the first couple of seasons. There were loads I didn't know about the Queen's early reign and I found it fascinating and Claire Foy was just perfect. Now, I feel like I know the story and it's not as captivating and the cast is poor.

RampantIvy · 10/11/2022 20:42

I wonder if it is because most of us actually remember the 1990s so it is easier to make a comparison between what we remember as fact and what we think is fiction on screen?

I have only seen episode 1 so far, but really enjoyed it.

Yeah, unfortunately he will always be Fred West to me

Ontobetterthings · 15/11/2022 21:27

Started trying to watch again. Not enjoying it. The new cast is awful
What were they thinking??

pompomdaisy · 27/11/2022 15:35

Just watched this series. Thought the portrayal of Diana was spot on, liked Imelda playing the Queen. Didn't like the portrayal of Philip and Charles as much. Liked Johnny playing John major. I thought Charles was portrayed in quite a positive light. It turned into a Princes Trust marketing advert at one point which was odd! I actually felt quite a bit of sympathy for Charles, Camilla and Diana and I'm no royalist!
