Vinted question - what does "pricing things to sell" mean?

So there seem to be two types of sellers on Vinted: the ones who say they're selling everything really quickly and everything's flying out the door, and the ones who can't sell anything no matter how hard they try and follow all the advice etc.

I've noticed that when the latter group ask for advice on here, there's sometimes people who ask "are you pricing things to sell?" WTF does this mean? It's such an odd phrase. Surely nobody would price things to not sell? Or maybe it just means, everyone on Vinted expects rock bottom prices, so are you pricing your designer shoes at 50p so that they sell? Or maybe there's too many cheaparses on Vinted and nobody's prepared to pay a reasonable price?

I think it means they are putting them on dirt cheap to shift them

Foolsandtheirmoney · 08/11/2022 18:37

The price is dictated by the market though. If your stuff isn't selling at whatever you deem to be a reasonable price then either it's shut stuff or it isn't actually a reasonable price.

thedevilinablackdress · 08/11/2022 18:38

It's sales-type language to say they're selling them cheap to shift them quickly.

yoghurtflavours · 08/11/2022 18:40

I'm selling things for a variety of prices, including some items for £1 and they're still not selling, and they're certainly not shit so I don't know what the answer is.

The problem with Vinted is the buyer pays the fees and postage, so even if an item is really cheap at £1-2, by the time you've added those on it can take an item to £5-6+ all in.
Make sure there's lots of good photos and description as that seems to be lacking on there too.

Forestflies1972 · 08/11/2022 18:52

I use vinted a lot and what some sellers don't seem to understand is that even if something is brand new, with tags you still have to price it at a discount with the cost of p&p and buyer protection accounted for. I see lots of items that cost the same as in the shops, they're never going to sell.

ThunderMoo · 08/11/2022 18:53

I sell on ebay and some of the stuff only makes 10p after fees and postage you have to remember to factor these in.

Happy to give you feedback @yoghurtflavours if you share your Vinted profile here. If it's not too identifying, that is. I buy a lot from there and am pretty good at selling too.

yoghurtflavours · 08/11/2022 18:58

Not going to share it here, no. Anyway, this post was more about the weirdness of the phrase "pricing things to sell" which is just such an odd way of saying things.

You have to hold your nerve on Vinted.
In general I think the expectations are greater than on eBay. People really expect a bargain. But there are some dreadful pisstakers, so best to price it for what you want/need and let it sit there until someone bites.

I’ve priced things very cheaply (think brand new with tags £150 dress for £20) and I still get people messaging ‘would you accept £3.50?. Piss off!

RobynNora · 08/11/2022 18:59

No need to be snippy with an anonymous stranger on the internet trying to help! A thank you but no thank you would suffice!

I don't want to buy your crap that's not selling for a quid - was literally just being nice.

Tomikka · 08/11/2022 19:02

“Pricing to sell” usually means to list a low price which undercuts others or tempts the bargain hunters.

But an item could be too cheap and people won’t buy it because it must be crap.

I’ve had items in a friends shop which has failed to sell, but they have seen people looking at them. I’ve put the price up and then they sold - for one rather than writing out a new price label rounding up to £10 I just put in a 1 (eg £5 to £15) and it sold a couple of days later
