World Cup in Qatar - anyone else a bit worried about this?

Talking with DH about this, and I'm convinced this tournament is going to be a bit of a car crash.

I feel like there's a sector of football 'fans' (by no means all fans), who will travel to Qatar just looking for trouble and who will use the human rights / civil liberties issues that are well documented and discussed, as an excuse/justification for bad behaviour. In turn, they will receive retaliation, I'm sure.

I'm in the camp that the WC in Qatar should be boycotted anyway and can't believe that so many high profile individuals can be bought so easily, but I can just see the next 6 weeks descending into chaos.

What does everyone think?

I think people will be too scared to misbehave too much in Qatar.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 08/11/2022 17:57

Anyone misbehaving in Qatar will learn the hard way that it was a very bad idea. And serve them right.

I agree that the WC should not be held there in the first place.

Florenz · 08/11/2022 18:01

It would be very stupid for football hooligans to cause trouble at this world cup and I'm sure most of them had enough intelligence to realise this.

Greenshake · 08/11/2022 18:08

Any football hooligans causing trouble at any tournament deserve all they get to be fair!

Glittertwins · 08/11/2022 18:24

I agree with Greenshake re the hooligans. I also disagree with whole thing in Qatar too.

mynameiscalypso · 08/11/2022 18:28

I don't think there will be too much trouble per se because I think it will be so heavily (and brutally) policed. It's all about appearances. But I 100% disagree with the fact that it's there in the first place. I normally love a World Cup but I just can't bring myself to have anything to do with it at all.

NotDavidTennant · 08/11/2022 18:32

Fewer opportunities to get drunk will most likely mean less hooliganism.

Greenshake · 08/11/2022 18:33

@Glittertwins definitely. This whole thing stinks of hypocrisy too.

Puppylucky · 08/11/2022 18:34

They are shipping in Turkish police who are extremely well versed in aggressive crowd control so I doubt there will be active trouble. I do think a lot of fans are in for a nasty surprise though in terms of how anodyne the experience will be - not to mention expensive!

SteveHarringtonsChestHair · 08/11/2022 18:42

I honestly hope some of the hooligans who ruin it for real football fans get a taste of Qatari justice. I have family out there and they can be arrested for eg buying halloween decorations. They will take no shit out there and anyone causing trouble will get exactly what they deserve.

Given that misbehaving can also include being gay I hope not.

Are you feeling ok? Qatari justice?
A misnomer if there ever was one

YorkieTheRabbit · 21/11/2022 11:13

Will fans misbehave? Very very doubtful given the serious trouble they’d be in. There’s no way you’ll see a repeat of the sciences outside Wembley last year.

Greenshake · 21/11/2022 11:16

I don’t know…..I wouldn’t rule it out

limitedperiodonly · 21/11/2022 11:19

I don't think that's even a remote possibility. More importantly what did your hubby think? I'm dying to know his opinions on this issue and many others.

Ted27 · 21/11/2022 11:19

I have a feeling it may be too hot for people to cause trouble.

Do you think being arrested for buying Halloween decorations is a good thing?

SpringRainbow · 21/11/2022 11:33

I must admit, I agree with others. It absolutely should not be held there, and anyone who even misbehaves out there (and let’s face it you do not have to do much to misbehave out there) they will quickly find out why it’s a very bad idea. I’m not convinced no one will try it in the first place.

sandgrown · 21/11/2022 11:34

I think the Qatari government have shot themselves in the foot. They wanted the World Cup to raise the profile of Qatar but it has just highlighted the problems there . The last minute changes to the alcohol arrangements and the current fiasco re the rainbow armbands , though I blame FIFA for that one, has damaged their reputation.

FrownedUpon · 21/11/2022 11:43

It already is a car crash. FIFA are crumbling under Qatari pressure, now threatening players if they wear the armband. The Qatar team is awful and won’t make it out of the group, so Qataris will lose interest quickly. The whole thing is a mess.

I'm not sure running around like a yob with your shirt off shouting 'lets ave it!' Is really worth ending up with your head on a spike.

SteveHarringtonsChestHair · 21/11/2022 13:01

If you go to a country like that and choose not to obey their customs then of course you’re going to get into trouble.

Do I think it’s fair or right? No. Which is why I wouldn’t go there (or anywhere with a dubious humans rights record) personally.

Do I think that football yobs going there and deciding they’re going to flout the alcohol laws/customs of a strict country deserve a night in a Qatari prison? Yes.

Anyone travelling abroad has a duty to understand and obey the customs of the country they’re visiting.

If you don’t like it, don’t go.

If enough fans had decided not to partake then maybe they’d have had to rethink holding the World Cup there.

SteveHarringtonsChestHair · 21/11/2022 13:02

Blocked - nobody will get their head on a spike. They may have their passport confiscated and be detained.
