Primary school - going toilet

Interested to know people's opinions on this after chatting with some playground moms about it.
What are your opinions on primary school children asking to go to the toilet during lesson and being refused? Is it a human right or should they be restricted to break times?

Toilet anxiety is a real thing. Not being able (allowed) to go can cause real stress and concerns. If my child needs to go then I'll tell them to go regardless

SallyWD · 08/11/2022 11:55

Early primary school yes. By years 5 and 6 they should probably be able to wait.

eddiemairswife · 08/11/2022 12:36

I used to teach Upper Juniors. If a child wanted to go to the lavatory during a lesson i would ask if they could wait. The answer was usually, "Yes." If, "No, Miss I'm desperate," then I would let them go.

Why do so many people miss the 'to' out of a sentence now? I'm seeing it loads.

Tbh I'm torn because of the encouragement of water bottles. When I was at school we didn't have a drink until milk time and lunch time. Then it was when you got home. But kids trooping in and out to the bog is disruptive and should wait until break.

Right?! 🙈🙈🙈

Going to the toilet. the

Argh!!!!!!

Bemyclementine · 09/11/2022 18:51

Depends. Ds1 will go at lunchtime and that's it. Has been the sane since he started school at just 4. Ds2 took much longer to recognise that he'd need to go snd often needed to go "now". He's 5 and in yr 1 and will need to go to the loo during class time.

JanglyBeads · 09/11/2022 18:52

If no one the PPs know says "go toilet" then you're obviously not in Northamptonshire or nearby.....

I would expect the expectations to change throughout primary school. I cant imagine restricting reception would lead to anything other than lots of wet clothes, but by year 6 you would hope most children could go in break, or at the least disruptive time in a lesson - so not the bit where the teacher is talking. Obviously the odd child might forget and need to go and should be allowed.

I’d agree with this, there’s a big difference between a 4 yr old and an 11 yr old when it comes to toileting.

dutysuite · 09/11/2022 18:59

I think they should be allowed to go if they really can’t wait…I’m sure teachers know the ones who will always try it on. At my daughters primary school they were only allowed to go at break but the children could never get inside the building to actually go. My sons secondary school have never refused my son but it has only ever had to go on the rare occasion when a school lunch has gone straight through him.

i found myself shouting at the automated voice on the bus,

the british museum.
strange stares from sundry passengers.
it's right, though, isn't it.
we should definitely not lose the article.
let us stand up for it, on the bus, on the beaches, definitely.

Unless there is a medical need, I think most children can manage between assembly/break/lunch. There not usually more than two hours between break times. Most teachers will use their discretion, but it is very annoying to have people in and out of the room.

If there is a medical need, or a genuine reason, I’m sure most would allow a toilet visit.
