Toddler shoulder injury - advice please

3yo fell of a kitchen stool last Monday onto tiled floor. He landed on the back of his shoulder - well more so the piece at the back between his shoulder and neck.

He cried and was really upset for hours. I gave it time to see if it would settle but it didnt so ge went for an xray later that day. No break, no dislocation so they sent us on our way saying to give him calpol for the pain.

The next few days he was very sore, couldnt put any pressure on the shoulder to the point he didnt want to get out of bed because it hurt to move.

Second hosp rang yesterday saying they reviewed the xray and no break but he should wear sling for another 2 weeks, then start gradually moving it. Asked if first doc had given him a sling - no they hadn't.

Last night during the night he woke crying in pain twice. Lying in bed crying cos he finds it too painful to get up. Gave him calpol and was able to get him up this morning. Hes visibly leaning to one side with the sore shoulder leaning down.

Does this sound normal for an injury like this? I'm wondering if a different part of the shoulder or even his collarbone should have been xrayed. Or what can I do to help him?

Hes a fairly tough kid so its unusual for him. This was his first time ever going to hosp/GP.

It’s bound to be sore for a while however I think in your position I’d take him back You think you’re wasting their time and being overly worried buts your ds and you can’t ever be too safe! They may X-ray another part of him and id be worried about a collar bone injury too. If all X-rays are clear after a second opinion then maybe a referral to a peads physio for further management.

if his collarbone is broken there’s nothing they can really do for it to be honest. They just elevate the arm and let it heal.

I injured my shoulder a couple of years ago and it was one of the most painful injuries I have had (have previously broken arms and hip). No bones broken but specialist nurse in a and e explained ligaments and tendons probably torn and would need to heal properly before shoulder working properly. I couldn't lift my arm up very far and couldn't put my lower arm backwards or behind me. I was given a polysling which made it way more comfortable and I had to waggle my fingers and gently move my arm about several times a day in gradual stages. It took 2 to 3 months to recover.
