Key stage one tests

DC (year 7) got put in class sets in September based on year 6 sats results.

they will move sets next term based on test results if show in wrong set. Does anyone know how gcse grades (on flight path) equate to a percentage grade from Key stage papers they have just done? ie dc was put on flight path 3+ at start of year and in placed in set four of eight (non grammar) but received 85 - 95 % in tests last week. Should we expect them to move up a set?

thanks!

Hopeful bump? Or is it school specific. Thanks!

This is school specific really. Some schools set very broadly in Y7, so that children can be in the same sets for, say, Maths and English, so that timetabling is easier. Some schools set separately. Some schools/departments move students up and down more frequently than others.

I'm out of the mainstream loop now, but it used to be very common to set GCSE targets based on KS2 SATS results. Meaningless. Several children could get a similar KS2 result and get wildly different GCSE results.

I'm assuming that you feel your child has been placed in a lower set than expected. In an English middle set, I'd be looking to move up a child who was performing at the top of the group across reading and writing tasks - I wouldn't go from just one or two assessments. Maths and science may be more objective, moving on data.

Parental concerns will be taken seriously if your child has been misplaced, so nothing to lose asking for some feedback on how they're doing.

Super helpful reply. Thank you.

yes am wondering if needs to move up but not wanting to be a pushy parent. School sets on average grades across all subjects… getting head round this too… a maths whiz would be in lower set if English and art bring average down

It's usually Maths and English setting in Y7 if it's bands rather than subject sets. And a lot of schools set differently going into Y8 - not many departments want their sets determined by another subject. If KS2 test results were not in line with ability (so average results for a 'top set' child), you might want to be that pushy parent.

If average SATS scores were about right, it might be better to see how it goes in middle sets first. School website might have information on how different year groups are set.

Our school sets in Sats scores and reading test data. This is assessed in my he first few weeks to ensure no glaring errors.

There are 8 sets and it's a sliding scale, students ranked in order then other factors taken into account when setting.

We create two bands x and y within which there are 4 sets.

The biggest difficulty is moving people up and down bands. Set changes within band happens twice a year after December and April exams.

English and maths sets are set separately to the rest of the x/y band which are just mixed and not ranked.

It's a bit early to think they need moving and need to Look at all data.
