So nervous about potential new job

Ahhhhh I'm so terrified yet semi excited but also need reassurance that I'm doing the right thing. I have been in a shop job for years, fed up working in retail and all the hrs, low pay and rubbish working hr over Christmas/ Easter/ back holidays etc. i have the potential to move job and earn an extra £1000 per month but I have never done this type of work before (admin role) but I'm so nervous incase I hate it. There would be training -I think it's 8 weeks but that's partly what's worrying me, strangely. What if I can't remember all the training when I'm actually doing the job?!? I only work 3 days atm so it would be full time with only the odd weekend/late night - i mostly works until 10pm which is becoming annoying.

The extra money would be amazing for my family, I'm just not a confident person

Please talk to me and give me your thoughts

Of course you’ll be fine. If it doesn’t work out, there’ll be plenty of others jobs you can get back to with the extensive retail experience. What would you tell a friend?

howhasthisgone · 07/11/2022 06:48

@LadyWithLapdog thanks so much. That's the thing I'd be telling a friend to take the fabulous opportunity, the training is there to help you, not scare you and there will be people to ask if you're stuck. I'd remind them how yuck it is working all the festive hours when other people are off and how life changing the extra money would be for the family.

Some one once told me to be careful of the rut you choose as it's hard to get out of it and it's completely true, I've always wanted an office job and if I don't take this then I'll be told old to start something new.

I wish there was a tablet that gave you confidence lol I know many people that wouldn't think twice about starting something new, im just a nervous (yet confident when I know what I'm doing) wee critter lol

Good luck! Even if the first office job doesn’t suit, you’ll find another or it will crystallise for you what you’re looking for.

This is great advice

I'm in a similar position op and doubting myself hugely but like you say being in a rut is too easy to fall into. Sometimes you need to be brave and take the leap!

Take notes whilst you train and the YouTube is your friend for anything else.

I'm also starting an admin job soon which I haven't done for a decade so apprehensive and excited too. Give yourself 6 months to really settle in before deciding you can't do it or it's not for you. That magic pill that gives you confidence is experience.

Perhaps use YouTube to look up things you know you'll be doing, taking minutes, using excel to make spreadsheets etc there are lots of tutorials to get you started.

If possible stagger the training so you learn a little bit then apply for some time before learning next part

ShopoholicIn · 07/11/2022 07:32

Some very good advise above like taking notes and going over you tube videos when you can to learn new things systems so help a long way. When you have free time try to go over the notes and piece things together, the process flows etc. It's scary but an exciting time n I am sure you will enjoy your new job, its the first step thats scary.. all the best OP.

My local college does free online professional training skills courses, I did one last year. They do it in all topics from IT skills to counselling & it's free if you're on a low income.

Thank you all for your kind and encouraging words. I will definitely bring a notepad and jot things down for research that I'm unsure of. I guess it'll take a while to settle especially going from part time to full. I have to do this tho. I have to do better for myself and grow my confidence. !!!

keep saying to yourself that they wouldn’t have offered you the job if they didn’t think you could do it. They believe in you, you just need to do the same. Good luck and you can do it.

America12 · 07/11/2022 09:02

Good luck , o hope it all works out for you. Don't forget they would t have offered you the job if they didn't think you could do it.

Have a notebook handy and write down anything you are having difficulty with, that way you can refer back to it.
