Does anyone know if we can leave our cruise ship without a tour in Rotterdam? Ie just disembark and do our own thing? The poor weather has changed the ships intended port. Many thanks

Can you Google things to find in Rotterdam and work out if you have enough time to do any of them?

CaronPoivre · 06/11/2022 21:32

Yes you can. Zebrugge was too high risk given forecast so diverted to Rotterdam - but you get overnight in port which is actually a better option. If the berth is a bit of a hike, there will be shuttle buses.

The old part of the city with traditional Dutch houses is lovely.

Thank you both for your replies. I had booked an excursion for Bruges which has been cancelled and refunded. There is no information as yet and we have been advised that we have queue in the morning to speak to the excursions desk. I was wondering if the port is pedestrian friendly and we can leave the ship under our own steam. It seems we will have lots of time there and we’re quite excited to see Rotterdam now!

How about downloading a Rotterdam walking tour app or is their info in the daily cruise newsletter?

Wessexheavytreader · 06/11/2022 21:48

That’s a good idea!

I don't know know about the distance, but know shuttles have been arranged.

There's going to be a trip to Amsterdam but the queue will be long, I imagine.

Assuming you're with P&O, that is.

ilovesooty · 06/11/2022 21:50

The port is an hour's drive from the centre of Rotterdam and you'll find it difficult to do something under your own steam.

CaronPoivre · 06/11/2022 21:52

There you go. Shutt6bus it is. The ones in Spain last week were very efficient and frequent..

Wessexheavytreader · 06/11/2022 21:56

Ah thanks! It is P&O. Our first cruise, we are a bit clueless 😁..

Rotterdam is easy to get around on foot/bike/tram. Assuming you dock at Wilhelminakade you can see Hotel New York, the Fenix Food Factory, the Erasmusbrug, the Foodhallen, and the bar at the nHow within ten minutes walk. Then cross over to see the old town at Delfshaven maybe?

leafinthewind · 06/11/2022 22:00

I realise though that I have no idea where cruise ships dock. If it's at Hoek van Holland it's miles away!

Mumsnut · 06/11/2022 22:01

There were buses that went from the port to rhe city centre key tourist stops, from memory

also, you can get to Amsterdam on the train; you don’t need to pay for a cruise excursion.

Wessexheavytreader · 06/11/2022 22:06

This has been really helpful. Thank you all for the great ideas and information.

Rotterdam is an amazing city, so I'm sure you won't be disappointed. It seems you'll have a shuttle bus, if not the RET metro runs direct from Hoek van Holland, through Schiedam and into central Rotterdam. Have a great time! So much to see and do.

Ah
I was assuming the OP was docking at Europoort where the P&O ferries dock.
