Teething in older children?

Name change because it’s outing. DS is 7. Went to the dentist last week and she mentioned he is cutting 3 out of 4 molars, didn’t think anything of it. Last night he was upset and said his teeth hurt, I just assumed he’d overheard the dentist and was saying it. During the night he was awake and upset so gave him calpol and put him back to bed. He’s woken up this morning with bright red, puffy cheeks and very upset. He’s very flat and not interested in doing anything, upset that his teeth hurt, doesn’t want to eat. I’ve let him have a sofa day and given him meds to help with the pain. But it’s getting later and he’s shakey when he tries to stand, hasn’t eaten all day, has a temperature despite being medicated and is just sitting there staring, not interested in talking or hugs or tv or anything. I’m not sure if I need to call 111 and get him checked? Or is this normal and just need to wait it out? I’ve never heard of teething in older children before and he’s usually very active and starving hungry. Has anyone else gone through this?

Call 111. It doesn't sound like teething, it sounds like he's significantly unwell.

@MolliciousIntent that’s what I thought, but all his symptoms are listed on the nhs website for molar teething. I’m awful at this type of stuff so never know if I’m panicking or if he’s ill 😞

Will he have an ice lolly? It would worry me too if painkillers aren't helping at all and he is shaky and can't even watch tv.

ive doubled him up on calpol and nurofen and his temp is down to 37.9 so I think it’s working. I’ve given him some ice chips to chew on (no clue if it will work, but it did when he was a baby?). I don’t have any ice lollies, but do have ribeana so I might make some up?

They are called the 6 Year molars and they are a bugger when they come through. Both mine were unsettled by them but particularly DS2 who has had horrendous teething symptoms since birth and still has problems now at nearly 10 when his adult teeth cut through. Our dentist advised plenty calpol and sympathy, I find it usually comes in waves and will settle down in a day or so xx

@tpmumtobe thanks! I’d never heard of it and neither had any of my parent friends so I wasn’t expecting this!
