Can I pack a bottle of bubbly on hold luggage?

It’s cheaper to take it (if I can) than to buy it
locally but I’m not sure if I’m allowed to pack a bottle of champagne in my hold luggage. Does anyone know please?

Yep you can 🙂

PurBal · 06/11/2022 17:09

Yes physically, but depends on the country your going to regarding limits etc.

Notjusta · 06/11/2022 17:09

Or buy one in the airport once you're through security - you might get a good deal in duty free.

Yes as long as it's well wrapped... done it many times. Just check the max amount you can take into the country without declaring, most companies allow 1 bottle

Raininghard · 06/11/2022 17:09

Yes totally but I always wrap tightly in a couple of plastic bags, so that if anything does happen ie it gets smashed the fluid is contained.

Whataretheodds · 06/11/2022 17:11

Depends on the customs rules at your destination. Where are you flying to?

Violettaa · 06/11/2022 17:18

I’d worry what the (lack of) pressure would do to the bubbles, but physics isn’t my forte!

...As long as the bottle stays intact (😬) there shouldn't be a problem...FWIW on pretty much all large passenger aircraft the holds are pressurised, same as the cabin.

I'd recommend all the anti-breakage hints and tips given upthread - plastic bags, wrap in towels as extra shock absorption etc...

Have they removed limits on liquids now? Haven’t flown since 2018 when I had a bottle of gin confiscated as it was over 100ml!!

tickticksnooze · 06/11/2022 17:31

Have you seen how checked bags are handled? I wouldn't be putting anything smashable in the hold.

HidingFromDD · 06/11/2022 17:32

Only if you buy it in duty free once you’re through security.

HidingFromDD · 06/11/2022 17:32

Sorry. Didn’t read it properly. Hold luggage is ok. Just use plenty of bubble wrap!

SeaGlassShining · 06/11/2022 17:33

I saw a lady collecting her suitcase at the airport once, and a bottle of alcohol had smashed inside her bag. She was panicking about her next flight and having all clothes soaked and smelling for her holiday. Nightmare!

Make sure you put in a plastic bag just in case!

dementedpixie · 06/11/2022 17:34

I would bubble wrap and then put it in a waterproof bag and wrap in towels to ensure it doesn't break and ruin your clothes.

We bubble wrapped bottles of spirits to bring them home from holiday in our case.

She's putting it in the hold not taking it into the cabin

Or keep the extra one from duty free to drink on the flight 😂😂

blobby10 · 06/11/2022 18:06

@dementedpixie I’m so sorry- didn’t read the post properly 😩xx thanks for pointing it out!! 😁

Houseplantmad · 06/11/2022 21:29

Thanks all - good to know. Have got lots of bubble wrap and will put them in a dry bag.

An inflatable bottle protector bag is what you need. Have transported booze safely in the hold using one of these.

It really depends where you are going? For example it is illegal to take any alcohol into the Maldives. Bags are X-rayed and any alcohol will be confiscated.

FiveShelties · 06/11/2022 21:44

The way bags are tossed around I would never put so much liquid in my suitcase. Make sure you have a change of clothes in your hand baggage.

utterflapdoodle · 06/11/2022 21:59

I wouldn't worry. Sparkling wine bottles are already thicker than standard wine bottles to withstand the extra pressure of the bubbles. I travel with a bottle or two of bubbly in my hold luggage virtually every time I fly, which is often, and so far have never had a breakage.... Fingers crossed and touching all available wooden surfaces.
