Anyone know what this part of a brace is called?

DS has these cushion bits on his brace to try to stop his top teeth scraping on the bottom. He's shown it to me today because it's a bit sore and I've realised one of the cushion bits has come off and the wire looks like it's in front of the bracket instead of inside it and pushing the tooth backwards. Does anyone know what these cushion bits are called for when I ring the orthodontist in the morning? He's got no idea how/when it came off. Bloody braces are driving me mad!

I don’t quite know what I’m looking at but when I had front train tracks, we used to have coloured ‘rings’ on them, around the bracket. Is it a ring that’s missing?

When I had sublingual (behind the teeth) train tracks, it was just the cement/adhesive then the bracket.

I didn’t have any ‘cushioning’ either time but I’m really wondering if you mean the elastic rings…

So he has the elastics which are the blue bits on the other brackets, for the bottom two teeth the orthodontist put the goldish coloured "padding" on. Perhaps they are just bigger elastics... I genuinely can't tell and now feel silly 🤦‍♀️ The orthodontist just said he'd put cushions on to stop them scraping. If they are just elastics then hopefully they won't be too cross about him losing it!

I've never heard of cushioning with braces. It could just be a thicker elastic.

As that tooth sits further back the elastic will be under more pressure in trying to keep the wire in the bracket

Does he have any of the dental wax to cover it to stop it chafing?

minisoksmakehardwork · 06/11/2022 17:03

It looks like a broken bracket to me. that's what I'd say to the orthodontist, because now the wire isn't attached or pulling the tooth into the desired place. As pp suggests, cover with some of the wax while you wait for an appointment to stop it getting sore.

catlovingdoctor · 06/11/2022 17:11

That's the bracket

dementedpixie · 06/11/2022 17:15

The bracket is attached to the tooth. The wire isn't within the bracket and it looks like the elastic has come off/snapped.

LIZS · 06/11/2022 17:15

Think it is part of the bond or bracket. Do you have any dental wax to cover it?

PC20 · 06/11/2022 17:16

Orthodontist here
The blue elastic rings holding the wire to the brackets are called 'o rings' (Well Ormolast is the full name but nobody uses it!)
The cream ones with additional thickness on the biting edge - well they are new to me. They look a possible way to cushion a bite which might catch the brackets. I use other methods to keep the 2 set of teeth apart.
Just tell the receptionist that some of the elastic bands have come off. HTH

I had these last year. My ortho called them bumpers

elliesmummy19 · 06/11/2022 17:46

I had braces a few years ago and had those bumper things on all of my front lower teeth because I had an over bite. They’d stop my upper front teeth hitting the brackets on the lower ones.

I’m not an expert but I’d call the orthodontist. They can probably just put a new one on.

GnomeyGnome · 06/11/2022 18:49

Thanks for all the replies, I have googled many forms of brace "bumper, cushion" etc but couldn't find anything. Glad to hear even an orthodontist on thread hasn't seen them before, they're obviously not very common. Will just take the above advice and tell receptionist it is a missing elastic. We do have wax so I'll get him to pop some on.
