If something is sold in a supermarket should it be clear on the packet that it has been previously frozen? (not an exciting thread, its about bread).

As title says.

My dp and ds went to Tesco on friday night, they wanted Panini bread but there were none on the shelves in the bakery bit, they asked a member of staff who went in the back and brought them out 2 packs which were frozen, the date on them was the 6th.

Obviously they were to be put on the shelves the next day.

I am not bothered either way but just wondered if this was a thing, I honestly thought the fresh bakery products would be well, fresh! I normally buy these and freeze them but I didnt know they were previously frozen.

So is this how the fresh bakery's are actually run? Does anyone know?

My ex partner used to be a Tesco baker or I’m sure that’s what he was telling me for 7 years lol

yes they do bake bread from fresh in Tesco stores , it’s quite a skill aswell . He once bought the kids home bread he made himself into shapes . The loaves of bread and cobs / rolls and hot cross buns .

he used to go into big deal about how bread is made !

@bellac11, Icelandic prawns are also frozen at source. All prawns are frozen at source.

@SarahAndQuack. Prawns come from either Canada/Alaska or Asia depending on whether warm water or cold water prawns, they are all frozen at source & shipped to the UK to sell as fresh. The supply chain is over a week so the prawns would be off if they weren't frozen.

No, you can get prawns from UK waters. britishseafishing.co.uk/prawn-and-shrimp-species/

UK prawns wont be what you are buying in UK supermarkets, the volumes are too small to service UK demand and mostly UK caught prawns will be sold to fishmongers or independents (not Morrisons).

YANBU OP.

i can confirm I have been on a field to fork tour of the local Tesco Extra with school kids. We saw how the bread and rolls were baked and got to eat fresh ones. They definitely made the dough there and then portioned etc before baking. This was a few years ago though but I believe is still the case in our local store at least.

That may well be true - though, during Covid, Morrisons sold an awful lot of stuff that would usually have gone to fishmongers/restaurants, and I wish they would again - but my point is, it's not correct to say that prawns have to take a week to get here. They don't. I don't know if this is still the case, but it used to be a lot of British fish and shellfish is exported elsewhere, and it's a real shame.

This peeves me aswell. I don't know that the labelling is going to change though is it?

An Aldi I called into to grab some brioche burger buns last week had put them all out frozen on the shelves. Wasn't expecting that and it definitely didn't say on the pack they had been previously frozen.

I've just checked online and it specifies they shouldn't be frozen.

I used to work in a supermarket bakery while at school. Everything came in frozen and was baked off in the oven. Not surprising really as everything on the shelves always looks identical. "Fresh" warm baguettes did still taste amazing though
