To ask what universities DD will be able to get into with these grades

DDtotheuni · 06/11/2022 12:57

DD predicted ABB with a C in her EPQ (already done the EPQ). GCSE grades 5566666678. Ideally she wants to get into a Russel group (to study either business or history). What Unis will she be able to get into with these grades?

No idea why the GCSE grades have come through as a phone number. Her grades are
2 grade 5s
6 grade 6s
1 grade 7
1 grade 8

Very much depends on the uni. Depending on other factors some of the more prestigious Russell Group unis like Cambridge, Oxford, St.Andrews etc are probably out.

Southlandssue · 06/11/2022 13:34

doesn’t it depend on what she wants to study as well?

If will depend what she wants to study. Less popular courses at so-called top universities (of which RG aren’t necessarily in terms of teaching quality for every subject) will require lower grades than ones heavily oversubscribed.

BruceIsACake · 06/11/2022 13:36

Why are you expecting people on here to tell you when you could just look at the uni websites?

CloudPop · 06/11/2022 13:36

Take a look at the "uniguide" website. There is an A level matching tool which gives you ideas

Allmarbleslost · 06/11/2022 13:37

look on the university websites op

ShanghaiDiva · 06/11/2022 13:46

Warwick would also be out for business/management type courses.
The complete university guides would help her to filter the courses where she meets the grade requirements. There are also many vg universities which are not in the hallowed Russell group.

CraftyGin · 06/11/2022 13:48

She needs to narrow things down a bit.

Location
Campus vs city

Whatuni.com is a good website.

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 06/11/2022 13:53

As a university lecturer as is DH, RG is not the be all and end all that some on here paint it as. For something like business, I would be looking at the community partnerships that an institution has, unless DD wants to go into history teaching or research, she should look for the course content that interests her. I have both attended and worked at RGs and seen and had to 'drag' too many young people through their degrees to satisfy parental expectations and vicarious dreams, it more often than not leads to low mood (and often clinical depression) and low confidence, neither of which are the aim of a UG degree.

OrangeBlossom28 · 06/11/2022 13:58

Uni frog is used by a lot of sixth forms so that could be a starting point. One thing to be aware of is grade requirements for maths GCSE for a business degree. A lot of universities stipulate a grade 6 which could be another way of filtering them.
Agree with the other replies. Decide on degree course, campus or not, how far from home and get visiting. A lot depends on the feeling of the place when they get there.

SisterGeorgeMichael · 06/11/2022 14:03

Is the A predicted grade in history? If not I don't think she will get a history offer in a RG university unless you get a contextual offer but all of this will be on the websites.

catsonahottinroof · 06/11/2022 14:05

I was going to say Sheffield but I've just checked and they ask for AAB. Maybe it would be worth applying anyway, or she could get a contextual offer depending on her school? There's a website where you can check if you are eligible for contextual offers - sometimes linked to on university websites.

SisterGeorgeMichael · 06/11/2022 14:09

Here are my DD's offers for last year for history. They are contextual though.

Nottingham Trent BBC
Loughborough ABB
York ABB
Bristol ABB
Newcastle BBB and B in EPQ or ABB

All had a specific grade for history

ilo · 06/11/2022 14:10

For History
Russell Group: QMUL, Cardiff, Liverpool, QUB.

Non Russell Group: Sussex, Loughborough

LIZS · 06/11/2022 14:16

RHUL standard offer is ABB for History. AAB/ABB for Business. If she is year 13 already and wants to start in 2023 she really needs to focus on this asap. Has she done any open days to help her narrow things down?

SirChenjins · 06/11/2022 14:23

What does she want to study? Focus on what motivates her, interests her, inspires her, what field she could see herself working in, and then work from there - not the other way about.

Kanaloa · 06/11/2022 14:24

If she looks up the degree she wants to do on UCAS it will often have what’s asked if candidates on there. Everyone applying to uni should be doing this extremely basic research.

RainBow725 · 06/11/2022 14:29

My DS has been looking at business courses. Most of the higher end unis want AAB. Lancaster and Leicester are ABB. We have only looked at a certain radius from home though so there maybe a few others. Aberystwyth and Bangor may be worth checking out as well.

Came on to say this!

For business, your daughter needs to look at industry experience gained, perhaps a degree with a sandwich year.

Look at www.ucas.com for entry requirements. Also your daughters college may have subscriptions to products like unifrog. They will also have a careers service- they can show your daughter how to search.
Is she Y13? If so, who in earth is she leaving it to now? She should have gone to open days already

crazycrofter · 06/11/2022 14:30

Aston is worth looking at for Business. They’re highly thought of by local employers and have good placement years/links with industry. Not RG but not an ex poly either, if that matters.

wibblewobbleboard · 06/11/2022 14:31

I would echo what @PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog says. I have had kids at Russell and non Russell group and the non Russell group were by far superior for the type of learning my children do and the type of kids they are.

mathanxiety · 06/11/2022 15:06

History and business are so different and lead in very different directions. What is her ultimate goal here?

Puddywoodycat · 06/11/2022 20:41

What's all this epq business?
