Is my baby too calm?

DD is 4 weeks old (not intended as a stealthboast!) She is completely different from DS (4 years). When she reaches the end of a wake window, she’s just calm and tunes out, even an hour later, she’ll peep for a snuggle or boob and then drift off easily. DS would cry and fuss and require a bit more calming and settling if he was overtired.

She had some jaundice that cleared and otherwise seems well, does cry at night when hungry, etc. I know it’s still early days and she may well change, but does this seem like a calm baby? I always thought DS was “easy” but this one seems remarkably chilled?

My DD was really calm and quiet as a newborn, barely even actually ever worked herself up to crying when she woke up hungry. We made jokes about at least we knew she could cry when they did the heel prick test.

Made up for it when she started teething though 😐😂

Thank you! Yes, that’s exactly it, I’m often reassured when she cries she’s almost too chilled! Did cry a bit with the heel test but not too much. I’ll be ready for teething in a few months…

Ds was incredibly chilled out until around 18 months. Not bothered about waking or anything until 18 month. Happy to watch the world go by with a smile. He didn't even cry when he was born because he was 'just so happy' according to the midwives. Enjoy!

Walking not waking!!

Our second was the same after our very different first! Strapping 19 year old at uni now.

No be glad she's so calm. My DD was like this when she was young. As long as she had boob she didn't make a peak. Enjoy it. It makes the newborn stage way more enjoyable. Congratulations Flowers

My DD2 was a very calm baby which was amazing after the whirlwind that was DD1. Even as adults DD2 is quiet and chilled and DD1 is still a loud ball of energy.

Thank you all! Yes, we are just enjoying the chilled out moments whilst we have them as I’m sure we’ll have more ups and downs as teethe, etc arrive! Just a bit shocked as I thought DS was so chill but this one has surprised me! Will be curious to see her grow and whether she keeps her mellow personality 🙃

Mine were both like that, very chill and easy babies. DD1 was an epic sleeper on top of that, going 10 till 7 from 6 weeks old while EBF. DD2 was more normal, needed night feeds but took them really fast. They both made up for it at other stages of their lives - 4 was horrendous for both, DD1 was terrible at 6, DD2 was awful at 9. They were both very easy teens though.

Duvetdweller · 06/11/2022 18:43

Both of mine were like this. And they both slept from 7-7 from 5 weeks. It was weird. Neither of them had a tooth til they were over 2 though and I think that helped.

waitingwaitingwaiting2 · 06/11/2022 18:51

Fascinating! @Duvetdweller , are they still so chilled?

My 3rd was like this, so chilled as a baby. Then turned into a terror toddler. Shes 4 now and slowly starting to become less highly strung. My nightmare colicky 2nd born though, absolute little angel at 7. Theyre all just different.

CuriousMama · 06/11/2022 18:59

My ds2 was so pleasant. Nightmare toddler but no bother since. Just seen him onto the train back to his ship he's 22 ⚓

Yes they are really. 17 & 15 and to be fair they’ve never given me a minutes trouble. They still sleep a lot (and still haven’t lost all their baby teeth 😂).

Did sth change?
I am having a really calm newborn and I am overworried.

waitingwaitingwaiting2 · 04/08/2024 19:19

@Eleonora94 shes nearly 2 now and still a lovely calm toddler so far! She’s chatty and loves playing and laughing and singing but is still remarkably chilled. Enjoy your newborn cuddles, I’d forgotten this was even a worry for me ☺️

That is so nice to hear.
I hope my baby is fine too.
He is just so calm.
he barely cries and I have ti wake him up to feed him.
i have feeling if I do not do that taht he will not cry.
and when he is awake he is just lying down and watching something but without centralizing to sth.
He does not make any noise and that worried me.
amI eavn went ti ER and they said everything is fine, but I am so worried if sth is wrong with him.
he is just 2 weeks old and I am so anxious about eeverythign :(

they can be very calm in the early days. If you are feeling so much anxiety, I would suggest talking to your health visitor. They can help with a referral for you. Or look up the CAMHS near you. The anxiety will drive you mad and keep you from enjoying the time with your baby. I had something similar with my first, it was awful but the mental health team helped me enormously. Good luck to you 💐
