Is it normal to just not stop eating until you feel sick?

Does anyone else and is it normal to eat non stop after your dinner and then feel sick?
For example today I had my breakfast and then I didn’t eat until lunch. Straight after my lunch out with my family I ate pudding, a packet of sweets then two oranges, a chocolate bar, more sweets, a cupcake, crisps, an apple and that apple did me in for the rest of the afternoon. I wasn’t hungry but once I’ve got the taste for food I just don’t stop.

How often do other people get this?

Eat until you feel sick?? Never, I don’t understand why someone would do that. Doesn’t it ruin it for you if you do that?

Allmarbleslost · 05/11/2022 22:14

Yes regularly. Food is both my comfort and my method of self harm.

Kirstenwe456 · 05/11/2022 22:14

@Isittrueornot How do you know when a certain food is going to make you feel sick until you start eating it?

Yes but I’m also aware I have a bit of a binge eating problem and no self control around food.

35965a · 05/11/2022 22:18

I do this occasionally, I honestly think it’s a kind of self harm behaviour

Never heard of eating disorders or self harm?

shivermetimbers77 · 05/11/2022 22:21

I used to but I’ve finally learned how to recognise when I’m feeling ‘satisfied’ (but not stuffed) and to stop there, and it’s helped a lot.

TomTraubertsBlues · 05/11/2022 22:22

No, this isn't normal I'm afraid. It's very disordered. Have you ever sought help/advice?

userxx · 05/11/2022 22:22

I don't think it's normal, no.

I'd have had enough long before feeling sick. If it is a 'feast' type situation like Christmas I'd be careful not to overdo any one thing so I could try a bit of everything.

inamarina · 05/11/2022 22:41

I‘d say it’s not exactly normal, but probably also not that uncommon. It’s basically (a type of) binge eating, no?
I used to do it, after a long period of eating very little and constantly counting calories.
Took me a while to get the balance right again, but I got there in the end.
Did you use to follow a very restrictive diet or similar?

StillWeRise · 05/11/2022 22:44

I think you know this isn't normal and you need to get help don't you

itsatavern · 05/11/2022 22:48

Surely you can’t think this might be normal

TomTraubertsBlues · 05/11/2022 22:50

I‘d say it’s not exactly normal, but probably also not that uncommon.

Just because something isn't uncommon, that doesn't mean it's okay or healthy.

CherrySocks · 05/11/2022 22:54

No, I actually only eat at mealtimes and have cut out any snacks.

Could you try that? Just eat at mealtimes. Savoury, pudding. Then that's it. Just stop until the next mealtime.

QueSyrahSyrah · 05/11/2022 22:54

No it's not normal, and since you ask how often other people get this then for me the answer is never.

I grew up in a family who thought if you were out for a meal you had to eat every morsel to get your proper money's worth. I often left restaurants feeling sick and then having a negative lasting memory of the restaurant.

I've re-trained myself as an adult to stop when I'm comfortably full and I very very rarely have a dessert now, much less more on top of that. Often I don't finish the main if the portion is big.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 05/11/2022 22:59

I think this is sugar addiction. But it could be self harm. I have done it plenty of times. It gets worse the more I do it which is why I think of it as an addiction. I feel so much better when I avoid sugar completely and don’t snack between meals.

FinallyHere · 05/11/2022 23:04

wasn’t hungry but once I’ve got the taste for food I just don’t stop

This happens to me regularly anytime I eat sugary and/or starchy carbs. It's as if I just don't have an off switch.

I can swallow food much faster than my body clocks that I am eating. By the time I feel full my tummy is swollen and distended. I feel terrible and sleep badly.

Now, I've leaned to think of it as a sugar hangover, the natural consequence of eating sugar or starchy carbs.

Eating low carb high fat I can manage to eat reasonable portion. Sugar .. not do much.

I wish I had known what triggered it got me much, much earlier in my life. We are where we are, glad to have finally (sic) got off the blood glucose rollercoaster.

Berlinlover · 05/11/2022 23:17

Yes, I’ve had this issue since my brother died by suicide 12 years ago.

ApplesinmyPocket · 05/11/2022 23:17

I don't do it exactly as in the OP, but I'm sometimes tempted to just go on and on eating say chocolates from a box. And then twenty mins later I can feel sick.

I've got into the habit now of eating what I think is a reasonable number - say four - and stopping. As I stop I tell myself I can have more in 10 mins time if I want them.

By 10 mins time, my 'system' has almost inevitably caught up and says 'god no - no more!' It's like there's some kind of lag there!

Kirstenwe456 · 05/11/2022 23:17

@FinallyHere Yes that’s the way I see it - I don’t have an off switch.

Talking of sugar, it is always sugary and sweet food (including fruit) that I binge on. I very rarely if ever pig out on savoury foods.

@CherrySocks I could try that but I will still have that mouthwatering feeling until I can eat something else - I have no will power.

OP posts:
Mummadeze · 05/11/2022 23:18

It is normal for me when I am tired or upset. If I am happy or really exercising will power I wouldn’t do this. But when I am in a binge mood, I would eat more than what you have described.

FeralWitch · 05/11/2022 23:25

I do it. In fact it happened tonight. Usually when I’m sad, lonely or otherwise hurting.

I call it ‘eating my feelings.’

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 06/11/2022 00:12

I sort of do - I was brought up to eat everything on my plate, so I do, regardless of whether I have space for it or not.

However I rarely - if ever - feel hunger. Because I'm constantly eating. I don't know why I do. But yes, I'm hugely overweight. And I wish I wasn't but I can't stop.

BMIwoes · 06/11/2022 10:07

I read this book last week - Brain Over Binge. It made so much sense to me. I've just had a full week of eating normally - breakfast, lunch, dinner, the odd snack when I'm hungry, one or two of the kids Halloween sweets, with no binging. I haven't eaten like this in years. I'd highly recommend it.
