Can anyone suggest the best NT locations in the North West, please? Planning to visit one at the end of this month

Don’t bother with the NT. Just go to Chatsworth

Saucery · 04/11/2022 18:38

Rufford Old Hall. Limited grounds, but nice house and small gardens.
Quarry Bank Mill.
Sizergh Castle. House, gardens and a walk around the estate.
Lyme Park.
Dunham Massey.

Sizergh’s my favourite but all have their place depending on what you want to do on the day.

MarshaMelrose · 04/11/2022 18:42

I love all those that @Saucery suggested.

If you're in Cheshire, go Little Moreton Hall. I loved that.

But where in the north west? It's a big place!

Whereabouts in the NW?

MissCordeliaPreston · 04/11/2022 18:43

Sizergh is lovely.

Zhx3 · 04/11/2022 18:44

It's small, but I loved Beatrix Potter's house.

Peekachoochoo · 04/11/2022 18:51

Had to come on and say Cragside but that's North West.

It's my favourite NT property so far!

GiantKitten · 04/11/2022 18:56

Another vote for Little Moreton Hall 🙂

GiantKitten · 04/11/2022 18:58

(The maddest, wonkiest house I’ve ever been in)

It’s not in the NW though.
And you have to pay! 🤔

Speke Hall in Liverpool is also a treasure. Very Like Little Moreton Hall but with furniture and fittings, giving a better idea of how it would have been lived in.

Also has a nice playground and woodland trail, great when the weather's nice.

RedDwarfGarbagePod · 04/11/2022 19:01

Love Little Moreton Hall! I'd never appreciated quite how wonky Tudor buildings could be until I went there...

Quarry Bank Mill is ace, especially the Apprentice House. It has (or used to have) leeches. And it smelled funny. Excellent.

Are Tatton and Dunham Massey NT? Or Lyme Park? Fond memories of all of these!

Toddlerteaplease · 04/11/2022 19:02

Lyme Park is gorgeous. It was Pemberly in the BBC Pride and prejudice.
Speke Hall,
Sizergh,
Are all nice.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/11/2022 19:03

Quarry back is nice. And loads to see.

RabbitHoleOfHell · 04/11/2022 19:06

You can access the Chatsworth grounds on foot for nothing. You have to pay to get into NT places, either via membership fees or pay on the day. Depends on your definition of North West. Chatsworth is nearer to Manchester than say, Sefton or anywhere in the Lake District. The ‘North West’ covers a big chunk of England.

WeAreTheHeroes · 04/11/2022 19:06

Tatton isn't NT. Dunham Massey and Lyme Park are.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 04/11/2022 19:07

Quarry Bank is lovely. Lots of walks and gardens, two cafes and a really interesting Industrial Revolution museum. The path from the car park to the mill is steep but a shuttle runs if you need one.

Dunham is also one of my favourites. Lovely grounds with deer, an impressive garden and two cafes. I think the hall is closed now for winter.

Tattoo is NT, but car parking isn't free.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 04/11/2022 19:08

Tatton, obviously. Blush

The gardens and house are definitely NT.

Tatton isn't NT. Dunham Massey and Lyme Park are.

Thank you!

Also agree about Chatsworth. Or Haddon Hall, near Bakewell? It's not so deep into Derbyshire.

Saucery · 04/11/2022 19:10

Speke, yes! Forgot that one.

Gwdihooooo · 04/11/2022 19:12

If you go to wray castle with kids don’t
bother going inside. It’s not set up like it used to be.

John Lennon and Paul McCartney's childhood homes.
Need to book in advance.

Tatton isn't NT. Dunham Massey and Lyme Park are.

Tatton is NT but it’s financed and managed by Cheshire East council. So NT members have access to the gardens and mansion, but are required to pay for parking and farm entry.

Isn't Cragside in Northumberland ?

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 04/11/2022 19:22

There's a new NT place in Manchester - Castlefield viaduct. Not been there but it looks interesting. Not big though, so more a stop off if you're in Manchester anyway. It's free though, even if you're not a member.

I saw a flythrough video on here the other day:
