Leaving marriage - Need to furnish new home quickly - help!

Quick background - I'm quietly planning on leaving an abusive marriage. I've got all my stuff organised - solicitor, paperwork, etc. And I've finally found a flat to rent and I can have the keys next week!

H will definitely make it difficult for me to take furniture etc from the marital home, and it's a battle I don't have the energy for. I want to just go quietly and then let solicitor deal with him.

So I'm starting from scratch. Looking at for example sofas online, the lead time for delivery is weeks or months. I need stuff next week. Any ideas?? I've had no luck on Gumtree nor on Facebook or eBay. Any clearance or refurbished websites that you know of?

I need a bed, sofa, dining table & chairs, washing machine, as well as kitchen stuff - pots, pans etc.

Local auction is where I buy my furniture it’s much much cheaper than the charity shops.

Brown wood furniture is terrifyingly cheap at auction.

Heavy though so bear this in mind. There'd be no rearranging the room on your own!

For appliances like washing g machines you can often get reconditioned from washing machine repair shops. You can get them fairly quickly

If you're not on a super strict budget, there's a Trade Secret in Cheshire, they sell overstocks, returns etc from branded furniture retailers.

Put the word out amongst friends you absolutely trust.

Ring local DV charity and they'll know of sources.

I got most of my stuff bc my cousin knew an old lady who was just about to move into a home and her family were glad to get rid of all the excess furniture.
Plus a lovely friend gave me the money to buy a washing machine.

We can't give this stuff away in my area. Look on Facebook and local free groups on there.

No luck on Gumtree, Facebook or eBay? Really?

rumred · 04/11/2022 19:55

@Moonah local auctions have ridiculously cheap furniture and they are great fun

Good luck OP.

I gave loads of stuff away on fb so keep looking, you just never know what might be advertised. Also consider setting up a cladestine fb account and advertising.

Women's charities may be able to help too.

If you find a local Facebook group you can message an admin who can appeal anonymously on your behalf for what you need. People often also volunteer van services too. I can recommend several groups if you are north east Manchester. Emmaus is also great, and there is a refurbished furniture shop next to the recycling centre in Oldham

Homesense often have some lovely bits you take away with you from the shop. Got some lovely occasional chairs and a coffee table from them.

If you're not too far from Manchester, try Emmaus Mossley

British Heart Foundation if you want 2nd hand, but i got my sofa from roseland furniture and they have new sofas in stock.
Cheapbeds.co.uk have a great selection of beds and mattresses with quick delivery. All new.
Some womens aid charities will help yoi furnish a house if you speak to them.
I agree with a pp, bean bag and a blow up bed to get yoi started and work from there.
Noa and nani have good quality but cheap beda and dining room tables
