Anyone work for Twitter?

What's the situation like right now? I'm hearing that employees have been locked out and are waiting for an email telling them whether they can stay or must go. Half the staff are expected to be fired -- can't believe it!

(I don't work for Twitter or personally know anyone who does.)

There are law suits popping up in literally every country his employees are in apparently over the way it's been rolled out

What since yesterday?! 😂

Even for employees who could bring a claim (over 2 years service or protected characteristic) they would still need to submit a claim to employment tribunal, go through ACAS early conciliation and wait months….

As per previous posters this is very normal in tech/start ups/US companies. Twitter employees will receive a package in excess of what they’d be entitled to had they been made redundant and an employment lawyer will likely advise that wouldn’t get any more through tribunal.

Mass job cuts are happening across tech companies because revenue is down. This isnt just Elon Musk waking up one day and deciding to fire loads of people. This will have been discussed and coordinated with senior leaders, HR and a legal team.

Lots of posters very naive to the world mass layoffs.

Trustylion · 05/11/2022 13:59

Also i suspect related to his Free Speech stance:

Twitter will not censor accurate information about anything

I suspect he's got rid of people who were obstructive to that now that Twitter is his playground. I find it hard to disagree with the sentiment, if not the execution.

It’s actually exactly that, because if you’ve been following the comedy, you’ll know there is no plan.

There’s a reason internal systems started fluctuating in reliability in the last 24 hours and mass advertiser pullouts began.

Internally, most teams don’t even know who is or isn’t still working. They have Slack channels and Google Docs trying to figure out who is still left to work on various projects. Well over 80% of Twitter India employees were let go.

It’s brilliant.

And yes, the Saudis have a stake in this too, because they’re apparently clueless also.

Total nonsense saying "since yesterday"- half of the folk aren't in the UK so it's nothing to do with our approach

I work in big tech and Elons moves are nothing usual ... not standard approach of layoff .

Compare Stripes action VS twitter .::

stevalnamechanger · 05/11/2022 23:59

Also I am not naive to it .. I work in the same industry . This is anything but standard .

It's a future movie plot ...

Liebig · 06/11/2022 13:56

This is gong well.

Can’t wait for Twitter to collapse on Tuesday.

Elon Musk losing money is funny because he's a clueless idiot who tried to wriggle out of this sale and made out like being forced into it was totally a thing he wanted. Also, he did it because some kid on Twitter was tracking his flights and called him names. The cultists having the emperor shown to have no clothes and not be the industrious galaxy brain they and the media seem to project is amazing comedy to witness.

Twitter not existing would be a net benefit to humanity. Facebook is currently imploding because The Zuck thinks the future is pretending you're in The Sims 2 for a work meeting courtesy of $1500 headgear no one wants to wear. Might as well start 2023 without social media, and looks like we're making progress.

Elon Musk losing money is funny because he's a clueless idiot

You might not like him but he's not clueless and he's not an idiot. You don't get to be the richest man in the world by being a clueless idiot - unless you inherited the money. There are lots of disreputable, unpleasant billonaires but it doesn't make them stupid.

I guess you missed how he inherited the money then and got by with gov’t subsidies for all his gigs. He didn’t even really do much of anything with PayPal. You’re looking at Steve Jobs to Steve Wozniak, that is, a marketing guy who has no actual understanding of the internals. Kinda like what he’s displaying now with Twitter.

Self-made man. Just like Donald Trump with only a dream and $100 million dollars in his pocket. Billionaires shouldn’t exist.

How is it possible to not let you collect your personal belongings?

The right to ones shit isn't absolute. I hope we all know the second part of a fire alarm ? Leave the building by the nearest emergency exit. Do not stop to collect personal belongings.

Nobody pays attention to that. See also "do not get your stuff out of the overhead lockers" if there is an emergency on a plane. And being sacked isn't an emergency anyway.

No, employers cannot make you leave without your personal stuff, although if I worked for Twitter and was office-based, I would have been taking any personal things home for some weeks now.

It's interesting though, I wonder what happens with all the WFHers. Yes they can turn your laptop and phone off, but you've still got them. I suppose if they can wipe them remotely there's no damage you can do.

Given how long interview processes take I am not sure all these people will have found new jobs by February. 3 months' money isn't enough - if I had more than two years' service I would definitely be looking for more.

reigatecastle · 06/11/2022 16:38

I've been made redundant a couple of times but I've not been escorted from the building, and in both cases I knew it was coming, so I'd taken anything important home already anyway.

PoundShopPrincess · 06/11/2022 17:11

Certain employers can make you leave without your personal stuff and can have security escort you from the building. It depends on your contract and sector. They don't keep your items. Someone boxes it up and it's sent on to you.
It often happens in competitive sectors and where there's the opportunity for an unhappy staff member to steal secrets/information or try to sabotage existing systems.

He became a millionnaire at 27, a billionaire at 41, and is now worth 200 billion ten years later. Regardless of his lack of interpersonal skills or personal moral integrity, he gets shit done very successfully.

I too admire his work ethic! If my dad had provided me with blood money to launch my business maybe I too would get shit done very successfully.

Except that didn’t happen. There are reports he received low level five figures from his dad at one point but that’s it. given the strained relationship with his father and the fact that his father was penniless by the early 90s, Elon and his brother were actually financially supporting him, his father has had basically no role in his success.

Mentalpiece · 07/11/2022 07:47

From what I've read today, he's begging some of the employee's who he fired to return.
I don't know how true it is.

MsFizz · 07/11/2022 08:05

Slightly off topic but I'm concerned his purchase of Twitter is directly related to the 2024 US elections. I'm worried that he will let Trump back on & thereby secure him a second term.

Curtayne · 07/11/2022 08:10

I suspect twitter will quickly lose its appeal to many people, much like Facebook has. They're better off finding alternative employment now I expect.

PoundShopPrincess · 07/11/2022 08:28

If Trump gets in, it will be because people vote for him. Not because of Twitter. Only 23% of US adults use Twitter.
Politicians and media barons pretend it's more influential and representative than it is. It's why they don't understand the electorate.

Liebig · 08/11/2022 12:31

The finest comedy.
