Kids breakfasts that don't involve cereal, bread or eggs

8 yo dd eats a LOT of stodgy processed white bread which we are trying to cut down on as it is causing her some health issues. She's a good fruit and veg eater but is fussy about cereals (only likes sugary unhealthy ones) and can't eat boiled eggs/ scrambled eggs/ omelette (though can have them in pancakes etc). She doesn't like brown bread unfortunately.

I'm a bit stumped for filling breakfast ideas. So far I've come up with homemade banana pancakes and smoothies with porridge oats added. Also baked beans, or maybe some sort of beans hash that I can make in advance and reheat in the mornings.

Anyone got any good recipes that are quick and easy, or can be made in advance?

If she eats yogurt, perhaps yogurt and fruit - you could always top with a few oats/grains.

My DC's two favourite healthy breakfasts are banana oat pancakes and sweet potato waffles (with a drizzle of maple syrup or honey on top). We make a batch at the weekend which keeps for a few days in the fridge.

Other than that, could you try peanut butter on 50/50 bread or healthier cereals (bran flakes, fruit and fibre etc.)?

Scotch pancakes easy to make quick to cook. You can make batter the night before

My secret weapon was omeloaf.

Beat two eggs, lob in two tablespoons of paxo stuffing, leave for ten minutes to thicken. Add milk to reduce stodge to a porridge consistency. Add a little oil to frying pan. Heat and add slop to pan making small rounds. Flipping when cooked on one side. Then serve hot.

Omeloaf sounds incredible Shock

Ideally you need some protein to keep her full.
We do
baked oats with a couple of extra eggs thrown in.
Almond breakfast "cake" with fruit - ground almonds, eggs & I then halve the sugar (generally use maple syrup or sometimes stevia) & throw in grated apples or any frozen fruit, lovely eaten with a bit of yogurt too.
Oatcakes/rice cakes with almond butter.
Overnight oats with nuts & fruit.
Pancakes - again with extra eggs to keep fuller for longer & a compote made without sugar
Yoghurt, fruit & homemade granola - again with much less sugar & nuts added

My fussy 3yo has porridge consisting of:

  • 3 part oats to 1 part buckwheat flakes, all ground up fine in the blender so more like ready brek. (I make up a tub of this which lasts about a week)
  • half teaspoon of ground flaxseed sneakily mixed in.
  • Sweetened with mashed banana or pureed pear/ apple (frozen in ice cube trays), sometimes honey added as well.

Normally do overnight oats with this - mix the dry ingredients with milk the night before in a container so it's half the cooking time on the hob or microwave. Then mixing in frozen fruit helps cool it down quicker.

The rest of the day is nothing like as healthy as this but I'm quite proud of his breakfasts 😊

My son likes overnight oats with raspberries

sonsmum · 04/11/2022 15:03

toaster waffles (mcvities or other brand) topped with yoghurt/fruit?
I see they now do chocolate toaster waffles too.

healthadvice123 · 04/11/2022 15:06

@Meadowbreeze see i would be opposite hot home made bread , i could eat loads
Processed bread not so fussed

muckandmerriment · 04/11/2022 15:10

This Jamie Oliver recipe is brilliant. I used to leave out the coffee though. You can eat it with yogurt or pour milk on it and eat like cereal/porridge

I don’t like porridge but I like baked oats, it’s like a crumble. I do frozen fruit, then mix one egg with milk, cinnamon and oats & top the fruit.

Potato cakes or oat cakes topped with beans or mushrooms and cheese.

Worriedaboutethics · 04/11/2022 15:16

@Babadookie

fruit , fruit salad

Smineusername · 04/11/2022 15:16

Potato bread!

mondaytosunday · 04/11/2022 15:24

Porridge. Add fruit.
Fruit smoothie? Not a huge fan of smoothies but throw some veg in there and you could also add oats.

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 04/11/2022 15:31

I am not a fan of sweet foods or so called breakfast foods so very often eat soup. Usually veg and lentil soups or in winter borscht made with stewing steak.

The Dcs eat toast with nutella most often but that is not my taste. I might do hams and cheeses and sliced tomatos and cucumbers with baguette though if wanting something lighter.

I used to live In easten europe and my fave breakfast on the way to work would be bread roll with butter and salami and some (very rough) cognac.

That may not be suitable before school, though to be fair.

harveythehorse · 04/11/2022 15:42

Potato waffles (they cook easily in the toaster), I serve them with tomatoes or cucumber because that's what DD likes but beans would be a more normal pairing!
Continental style breakfast - breadsticks (or cheese twists), ham, cheese, some sort of fruit and veg
Quick egg muffins with ham/mushrooms

diddl · 04/11/2022 15:52

There are so many different types of bread I would have thought that it would be quite easy to get her away from the stodgy white!

Fish fingers are a fave breakfast of mine.
Egg fried rice.
Bacon, beans, mushroom, sausages, tomatoes, rösti-some or all!

Retrievemysanity · 04/11/2022 16:02

Oatcakes with hummus and grated carrot/cucumber are winners here. Not sure if it’s too bread like but a breakfast wrap with scrambled tofu (as she doesn’t like egg) and avocado or something like that.

Doje · 04/11/2022 16:06

Nadiya has a 'Pancake Traybake' recipe that we love in this house.

250g flour, 1tsp baking powder, 2 eggs, 170ml milk. She adds sugar but it doesn't need it. Dump it in a dish and cook at 180 for 30 minutes whilst you shower. You can make it the night before to save time.

In her recipe, she tops it with PB and J, instead (one of mine doesn't like jam) I top with frozen fruits before putting it in the oven.

Dollop of Greek yoghurt and a drizzle of honey to serve.

You can also make twice the amount of batter and freeze half for next time.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 04/11/2022 16:11

I think you said upthread that she doesn't like Weetabix - but have you tried it wirh warm milk - enough to make it a Ready Brek like consistency? It tastes completely different to Weetabix with cold milk.

Crumpet topped with ham, a pineapple ring and a slice of cheese or grated cheese, grilled til the cheese melts.

Rice pudding really isn't any different to rice crispies, although more sugary, you could make your own the night before while you're making the evening meal.

Bananas and custard

Fish cakes or fishfingers and beans

I sometimes have a microwaved baked potato with tuna, sweetcorn and mayo. Not a traditional breakfast dish but really anything goes if you can face it first thing! I've finished off leftover lasagne before now!

ouch321 · 04/11/2022 16:14

Brown bread is vile.

50 50 bread however has the health benefits but also tastes good.

The Warburtons one is lovely.

I do NOT recommend the Hovis one; they changed the recipe and it now tastes very bitter.

downtonupton · 04/11/2022 16:21

my niece has chinese dumpling every day for breakfast - buy frozen from Chinese supermarkets and take about 3 mins t cook

viques · 04/11/2022 16:30

Breakfasts need protein and slow release carbs

sausages, cold chicken, ham, good natural yogurt, cottage cheese,

porridge, cheese flapjacks, oat cakes, pasta

GlitteryFarts · 04/11/2022 16:32

Hash browns and beans. Kipper? Loved them as a kid for a treat!

Dilbertian · 04/11/2022 16:32

I like these crackers with almost anything. Hummus, avocado, peanut butter, cheese (any!), butter and Marmite (tricky to spread). Not so keen on them with sweet toppings, but that could be because I'm not as keen on sweet toppings, rather than them not going. I also like them with a cup of bouillon - sort of hand-held croutons.

HumpreyDowny · 04/11/2022 16:34

Banana loaf, low sugar - no sugar - savoury Breakfast muffins made at home? Batch bake then defreeze the night before maybe?
