Help!!! I accidently gave my 8 month old honey

I am worried sick.

My husband made our 2-year old a concoction, because he's got a cold: Made of hot water, honey, pear, apple, ginger and lime.

Without thinking I let my 8 month old sip on it twice. I don't know how much she drank, probably a few ml.

I am now worried sick because I know honey can be poisonous for under 1 year olds.

What should I do? What symptoms do I need to look out for? Do we need to see a doctor? A&E?

Thanks for any help!!

It's not poisonous. There is just a very very very small risk of of bacteria being present which causes botulism. Extremely unlikely to be an issue

KindergartenKop · 03/11/2022 17:59

Honey is only a problem if the batch you gave her is infected with botulism. The chance of it actually having botulism is absolutely tiny. Don't worry about it, she'll be fine.

Don't worry. She'll be okay

In the old days we gave our children honey when they were about six months, they're still here!

BobbyBobbyBobby · 03/11/2022 18:01

Wasn’t a thing when mine were young.

Caspianberg · 03/11/2022 18:01

It’s fine
we live in mainland Europe, and

Sorry, here they sell baby porridge from 6+ months with honey

OwwwMuuuum · 03/11/2022 18:03

It’s not poisonous! As PPs have said it’s because of the tiny risk of botulism.

Most of what passes for “honey” in this country is actually processed glucose syrupy crap. No nutritional value whatsoever.

When you do start giving LO honey purposefully, make sure it’s a brand that’s raw, unprocessed and has its proteins and enzymes intact.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 03/11/2022 18:04

There have been 17 confirmed cases of infant botulism between 1978-2013 (according to Google) in the UK

There has not been a case of infant botulism in the UK since 2013.

I imagine you take your child in a car every day and don’t even consider how many people have died in car crashes…

This doesn’t need to be a thing you worry about.

You really need to calm down. Your baby is perfectly fine.

Hugasauras · 03/11/2022 18:07

Absolutely no need for concern.

Hugasauras · 03/11/2022 18:07

And please do not go to A&E 😱

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/11/2022 18:09

It's a miniscule risk, and only present in honey blended with Chinese honey. If it was local, home produced, artisan type honey, I don't think there should be a risk at all.

Shouldawouldacoulda30 · 03/11/2022 18:10

Well I have had three children and I never new this was a thing !! They are all thriving 20+ year olds . Really don’t worry.

Mossstitch · 03/11/2022 18:28

Don't worry, my three young men all had honey in their porridge from a very young age (I thought was healthier at the time and we weaned much earlier than now) never did them any harm and as was made with hot water likely would kill any bugs anyway🌻🐝

Worriedsick124 · 03/11/2022 18:32

Thanks everyone for your reassurance ❤️ I feel much better now
