Hello mums,
I didn’t grow up in the UK so still learning how to navigate schools and bringing up kids in this country. My oldest (Girl - 4 yo) has just started reception and am getting used to the school drop off and mom cliques. She been invited to her first birthday party and I wanted to ask what the Average value of birthday presents should be (assuming there will be maybe 3-5 birthdays for school friends a year maybe)? What is a decent / acceptable amount to spend on a present? Are gift cards acceptable since we have no clue what the kids would like? Thank you!

No don’t get a gift card. I would spend between £10-£15 and just choose some nice books or a simple toy. I would also prepare for you child to be invited to more than 3-4 parties this year!

Typical gift value is around £10. Things like a craft kit, jigsaw, game etc. I wouldn't personally give a gift card at that age, but lots of people do!

For that age group you can often pick up something decent for £6-£8. The Works often have nice jigsaws, games, craft sets, books etc.

When you see things on offer, pick up a couple of bits and build up a little stash. I also get the 10 for £1 cards from Card Factory but a sticker or sharpie on the gift wrap does to job as well.

I would say £6-£8

Have two DC, 6 and 4 and I would also say around £6-8. If I don't know what toys they're into, I usually do something something more generic, like a game, kinetic sand, lego, science or craft kit. Most of the time, I manage to find quite good bargains (or like a PP, pick these up in advance as I see them) so they seem more expensive than what I've paid.

And also be prepared for likely a few more parties! My two have already been to two each so far.

Not a gift card. Just make sure the present is age appropriate. I think £8 is standard.

I do under £10.
I always pick stuff up on offer and keep in wardrobe.
Dd started in Sept. Shes now been invited to 4 already!.

Misspacorabanne · 03/11/2022 18:39

I'd spend no more than ten!
But then, ive absolutely no experience, as my DC has asd and has never been invited to a party.😔i hope that will come in time.
I think I'd just buy some nice books, or some toy cars etc, or maybe a little craft set!
Hope your dd enjoys the party 🙂
