I absolutely hate my birthday

I'm a grown woman, how does my birthday manage to upset me every single year? It's always just a stark reminder that the people in my life just don't care about me that much. It makes me feel like utter shit every single year. I just needed to get that off my chest.

I think us Capricorns should have another birthday (like the Queen (RIP) so I can have a nice picnic on a summers day!

@Amandasummers Me too, OP

Mine's December 25th and I hate it. It must be great not having to think what presents to give to people on your birthday, to have a dinner that is special and not the same as every other year or to be able to book a restaurant for a meal out and not be told "oh sorry it's Christmas Lunches only". The absolute worst is when after giving my date of birth there will, without fail, be the exclamation "Oh Christmas day" ....like I hadn't already figured that out for myself after 50+ years. I've now taken to saying "is it??? wow" in a bit of a sarky tone.

@BuddhaAtSea

"Then we started going out for a meal on my birthday. One year I took myself to London to an art gallery, I had lunch in Chinatown and bought myself a jumper in Massimo Dutti and a glass of wine from M&S. And as I was travelling back home on the train, I thought to myself: actually, I had a lovely day, celebrating I’ve had a good, healthy year, I’m really enjoying my own company, and more importantly, I’m happy it’s my birthday and I’m ok with celebrating myself."

Can we do this together this year? Asking for a friend obvs! 😅

Absolutely!!!! And I mean it. Do you fancy going to the Royal Academy? They have a Spanish exhibition. We can take the audio guides and do it at our individual paces. Then we can have some tapas at Jose Pizarro. And Massimo Dutti is Spanish, so we’ll have a Spanish birthday in the middle of bloody January in London. Why not?! Bring it on!

Dillydollydingdong · 04/11/2022 16:39

My birthday on Monday. I don't want a present. Me and the bf have gone away for a luxury weekend in a hotel with swimming pool, spa, hairdresser and lovely food. I suggested it, but he booked it.

Pixiedust1234 · 04/11/2022 16:46

Hate mine too. Doesnt help that its a celebration day for others (think Bonfire night, Halloween, New years day, Valentines day, Boxing Day etc) so my birthday not only gets forgotten by everyone but any meals out aren't that special. Its weird.

AShepherdsTale · 04/11/2022 16:52

My birthday is on Armistice Day, and I’m of an age where it was kept as a very sombre day (born not so long after end of WW2) My younger years birthdays were quiet days and I was never allowed to be excited or happy… I had to ‘remember the dead’ go to church, make poppies at school and lay wreaths
The younger me didn’t understand all this.
Gradually over time that has changed, and I felt happier on my day - then on the day when i was 35, my DBrother died tragically.
i just try and ignore the day now. Friends buy me flowers and we have cake if I’m in work, but other than that, I just count the hours away.
Last year I visited Chester Cathedral and it was beautiful… so I’ve come full circle really!

mincen · 04/11/2022 17:40

Mine is just after Christmas. I don't enjoy it much, usually feel a bit tearful. New Years is even worse though, makes me proper sad.

Chasingclouds100 · 04/11/2022 17:46

I completely understand you on this one, I hate my birthday also. I was born on the 13th and superstitious or not something bad always happens on my birthday - the worst being that my younger brother died 2 days before my 30th a few years ago and I spent my actual 30th with him at the chapel of rest and planning his funeral at the undertakers. I do love celebrating other peoples birthdays with them though!

TheNoodlesIncident · 04/11/2022 18:09

@Amandasummers I'd guess it's not the actual day that bothers you, but that you don't feel appreciated by your family and social circle. That really sucks, I'm sorry.

I imagine that if you did feel valued and appreciated, and everyone made an effort to make you feel special to them, you wouldn't have the same resentment.

Have some Cake and wish them all in the sea

pompomdaisy · 04/11/2022 20:13

I can understand older adults wanting to treat themselves on their birthday. Take the day off, get their nails done. What I don't understand is how they expect others to remember and make a big fuss. My brother used to make a big deal of his birthday letting everyone know what age he was going to be and I used to think 'you're 55 get over it!

Tallulasdancingshoes · 04/11/2022 20:44

I don’t like my birthday either. I always feel really sad.

@BuddhaAtSea

I read this yesterday, and it meant a lot and I saved it and it was nice to reread it when the day came.

Thank you so so much, (the day of dread already went by and I got through it ) but what a lovely thing to read on MN's. Just to be able to visualise it, that was a lot 💐

Bless you. Glad it struck a cord, in a good way.
I’ve got a job for you. Next time you go to the shops, see if you can spot some seriously sparkly nail varnish. And I mean properly sparkly.
Paint your toes, even if it’s winter and you hardly ever see them, every time you take your socks off it’ll make you smile 😊 Don’t wait for your birthday to do something nice for yourself:)

ladygindiva · 22/11/2022 11:06

I did a search for birthday posts hoping to find something like this so I'd feel less alone. Today's my birthday and DP left it too late and my presents haven't arrived on time. He panic bought me a box of chocolates despite me constantly stating I'm on a strict diet and intend to stick to it. I have 2 stone to lose. Now he's sulking watching the world cup because I'm not impressed.

Beebumble2 · 22/11/2022 11:37

I hope you had a good day amanda. Like others, mine’s the beginning of January, when everything is shut, bedraggled and people are too tired to bother.
As a child I never had a birthday party and don’t particularly like them now.
What I do now is plan something treat wise, I let my family know what I’d like to do and we usually manage it. Sometimes it’s a say later due to places being closed etc.

Beebumble2 · 22/11/2022 11:38

Day, not Say!

Deathraystare · 22/11/2022 13:59

@ladygindiva

well I hope your prezzies come soon. I hoe you were able to enjoy yourself despite husband's forgetfulness.

Can I ask you, do you consider yourself a Scorpio or Saggitarius? Sorry to highjack the post but I had asked on my own post but there is tumbleweed.

Basically, it is also my Brother's birthday today and I have noticed over the years that the end of Scorpio has changed from 22nd to 21st.

I know it isn't of wordly importance but it bugs me as to why it changed!

sympathies... mine is a couple of days before and its pointless going out for a meal when you know it's going to be all turkey and crackers... I seem to have spent most of my birthdays wrapping other people's presents or cleaning the house! As a kid I had one birthday party in the summer as an experiment - not sure if that would work as an adult though.

Haha its a good question. I was born shortly after midnight on 22nd, so I've always considered myself a scorpio, as I'm nearly the 21st! I think it's changed because of the astrological times changing or something. I know that the year I was born it turned into sagittarius at around 5am( I had a lovely hippy friend with an almanac who was able to look it up and confirm me as a scorpio) but it changes year by year , I suspect in one direction, hence the dates changing.

Deathraystare · 22/11/2022 14:26

@ladygindiva

Thanks for that Ladygindiva! My brother was born in the afternoon because I remember Dad having to make our tea. It was toast and jam (normally reserved for breakfast but Dad is no Gordon Ramsey/Jaimie Oliver). I pissed mum off by saying it was the best tea ever!!!
