Ouija Board Weirdness!

Vincitveritas · 03/11/2022 12:17

Since we've just had Halloween...

I should start by saying I have personally never used one of these and never plan to. There's a lot of information out there at the moment trying to debunk and pass these off as 'just another board game'.

The only thing I've heard indirectly was when some local teenagers ran to the Vicarage in the early hours of the morning in a lot of distress after playing with a OB.

Has anyone here used a Ouija board? What was your experience and what do you believe caused it? Do you think they're just a bit of harmless fun?

But what happened @Nongatron ?

LadyOfTheCanyon · 03/11/2022 15:38

Used to do it a lot as a teenager with friends.
I have no doubt we were unconsciously pushing it ourselves but it used to give us some fantastic answers - we had a session for hours once where the "spirit" spent a long time explaining that everyone had different innate spiritual talents that could be viewed on the astral plane. I was transcribing as we went along as it was going so fast and we asked what each of our talents were. When it came to me I was told that "people have different frequencies and you hear them"
Ive always liked that.

Some of them were a lot darker than others, some quite chilling and sometimes the glass just rambled back and forth and got nothing.

MonsteraDeliciosa · 03/11/2022 17:33

I love the look and aesthetic of Ouija, and the gothic horror creepiness, but there's nothing supernatural about it.

How could a "spirit" be able to move a planchette or glass with people's hands/fingers on it, but not without?

Watch Derren Brown's "The Seance" for an excellent and well-presented explanation of how and why it works (and is utter bllcks, occult-wise). Link:

That said, I would advice caution, particularly if doing it with suggestible people. I've known a few people who were genuinely spooked and very, very distressed for some time after playing with it.

Yes, therein lies the problem. Suggestible people could be frightened and/or believe something has happened, which could lead to upset for them. That's the risk.

There would be no risk for me whatsoever. Heck I'd sleep alone all night in Borley Rectory! 👻

I've heard of Borley Rectory. I used to have a ghost hunters book (borrowed from the library) and it featured there, possibly as one of the most haunted places in England.

I was a young teenager then I think!

I was also a teenager with a penchant for the ghostly and unexplained. Borley Rectory was always in those books! Yes, it was touted as the most haunted house in England.
It's now demolished, which is a shame because someone could have made a good business out of it!

Watch Witch board it will put you off for life!!

Yes! This! I watched it as a teenager in the 90s and still occasionally freaked out at night 😂

autienotnaughty · 04/11/2022 09:34

@oofmehip same!! I would not use a ouija board after watching it

Justkidding55 · 04/11/2022 10:17

I wouldn’t use one. My dad did one at university and said they asked for a message. The board spelled “tell pat I don’t mind”. Turns out a lad there’s dad died and his mum pat had just met another guy. No one there knew that information.

You've guy your love Mumsnet! Until yesterday I'd forgotten I'd ever had an interest in that sort of thing.

Absolutely agree. Though I'm actually sad to hear about Borley Rectory. I had no idea it had been demolished.

MonsteraDeliciosa · 04/11/2022 11:52

@xon it was demolished in 1944!

It is sad, though, I'd have lived to have visited!

Blush

I wonder when my book was dated from! I shall blame that. I don't recall it being mentioned in any case.

It's a board game made by a company that makes board games for children. The mechanics behind how it works are fully known and understood. There is nothing other than basic physics at play.

That said they can be fun if you are with a group who all want to be creeped out and are willing to play into it.

I wouldn't call it a board game.

Mudbabe · 22/02/2024 20:09

If do play ouji boards anywhere online it at your own risk but have fun. Believe in the paranormal. I think Zozo real Zozo tried to strangle me in my sleep I could see Zozo face long black hair he's white.

What 😂

Craftycorvid · 22/02/2024 20:30

It doesn’t matter that it’s a game made by a commercial company, or that there is likely to be subconscious manipulation by players/users. These things tap into lots of stuff, some of it our own material, others what you might call collective unconscious, and perhaps some unexplained elements, too. And it can be very unsettling. I personally would not use a ouija board as it’s rather like unsecured broadband - anything might hop on that frequency.

Mudbabe · 22/02/2024 20:36

It my gramma not one hundred percent perfect, cosycover

Giggorata · 22/02/2024 20:51

In a recent thread on the same subject, I recalled the time when a group of us had ouija board sessions, using a glass and letters.
There was a definite sensation of vibration in the glass when I touched it, even when it was just me. We experimented, with single people, as well as the group.
Whether or not it's woo or taps into some kind of electromagnetic energy from the users, I don't know but there is something that goes on.
Also, when we were freaked by a message and took our fingers off the glass, it carried on moving for a short distance, not randomly and not from a push, which would have been noticeable.
All those who would deny that there are things as yet unable to be explained, will say I am lying or deluded. I'm not.
