Why are my jumpers always ruined after 1 wash?!

I don't know where I'm going wrong so would appreciate some advice because I'm clearly useless! I wash my jumpers on a delicate wash and every single time they come out tatty and bobbly 😡 so they don't last me 2 minutes, just bought a few new ones this year and I've just washed some for the first time after wearing them a few times and they're all fucked now. What am I doing wrong? Is this normal? It's costing me a fortune and surely they shouldn't be ready for the bin after 1 wash, this happened a lot last year too when I bought a few new ones 🥴

I always use fabric softener aswell, maybe it's my washing machine? It's not very old though. I mentioned it to my mum and she couldn't understand it either but did offer for me to bring them round next time and she will wash them for me but surely I shouldn't need my mum doing my laundry Blush

Use cold wash. I've resorted to this for things I like. ..because my BOSCH washing machine is basically a destroyer.

No idea why it's happening in the first place but you can just shave them with a disposable razor.

£28 for acrylic?? You can get pure Merino wool at Uniqlo for a pound more and they wash and wear brilliantly.

Boden sells acrylic mix jumpers for around £70! 😮 I bought one in the sale and it looked good for the first wear only. Never again.

Rainbowshine · 03/11/2022 11:09

Fabric softener is also terrible for some fabrics, I would suggest not using it.

Even though I have a good washing machine I always wash jumpers and delicates by hand in the sink and then spin them on a rinse cycle. I have never lost a jumper yet - some of them are very old and still look Ok I always dry them on the line or on a rack. I never dry flat.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 03/11/2022 11:23

It’ll be the acrylic
Second someone above whos said at £30 you can get some lovely bits from Uniqlo

Hooverphobe · 03/11/2022 11:28

Acrylic won’t even keep you warm. You can pick up secondhand wool on eBay or Vinted for a few quid because most people don’t know their fabrics.

StayOutOfIt · 03/11/2022 11:28

I haven't used the wool setting as stupidly just thought delicate would be ok.
The label says to use a wool setting though!

Use the mesh wash bag for washing machines. I chuck everything in the machine together, never got ruined.

VenusClapTrap · 03/11/2022 11:48

Check out Woolovers. Clearance section. Here is a merino and cashmere jumper for £29.50, for example. They wash beautifully and are lovely and warm.

It’s because it’s acrylic. Go to Uniqlo or similar in the sale and buy wool, not a acrylic. Or m&s. . Wash on a wool wash with shampoo or a special wool washing liquid. Don’t buy two cheap acrylic jumpers. Buy one decent wool jumper.

MidnightMeltdown · 03/11/2022 12:06

Avoid acrylic like the plague. It doesn't stand up to washing.

Also, I never put my jumpers in the washing machine, I always hand wash them.

Eumy · 03/11/2022 12:28

So like others have said I think it’s because it’s acrylic/polyester. I personally hate merino/wool jumpers, and also can’t afford any high end jumpers. I’m also the worst at washing - most things go in a mixed load. I tend to go for cotton/viscose jumpers as I find they wash better and do go weird like acrylic/polyester blends - they’re not as thick so I usually layer them. The only special treatment I give them is that I don’t tumble dry them! They don’t last as long as wool/merino would, but they last me a few seasons at least!

MidnightMeltdown · 03/11/2022 12:52

Gap usually do merino wool jumpers that aren't too expensive. Especially as they always seem to have offers on.

Irridescantshimmmer · 03/11/2022 13:08

Mine turn out fine on a wash that is not too hot in a washbag. I just do one wash and shove wool items, jumpers, scarves, gloves and hats in washbags and they all come out smelling spring fresh and looking great.

Useyourfork · 03/11/2022 13:30

I only ever buy cotton now for this very reason. I once washed a favourite wool jumper, it came out so teeny tiny (would have fit Sooty)😆 I was gutted at the time.
Never had any problems with cotton (warmer too)
