I loathe my electric hob

I burn the pan every single day of my life. It doesn't turn down. It has two settings: hot as the sun or (eventually) off. I hate it.

I hated my shark it's spat rubbish, refused to clean , got a ridiculous amount of hair tangled and stuck in spite of its "anti hair lock" . I got rid of it. I have Henry now and I'm happier.

BamBamBilla · 03/11/2022 09:19

Yep, I hate mine too. I even use a little camping gas stove instead sometimes when I need actual control of the heat like with stir frys. Don't panic MN, I do it out in the car port so its well ventilated.

Skiphopgoosebumps · 03/11/2022 09:28

I had a hot plate hob like that - it reached a point where the temperature was volcanic no matter the setting and I had to stop using it. I bought this single induction hob and used it along with an instant pot until I got my kitchen refitted. The single induction hob was great and I should have bought it sooner!

TheFeistyFeminist · 03/11/2022 09:40

The hob we used most went like this, and then the cooker electronics started to fail, the clock and the timer went kaput. It might be a sign that the unit is on it's way out.

Bogeyes · 03/11/2022 09:43

We have an induction hob. I wish we had bought it years ago.

Threadkillacilla · 03/11/2022 09:44

You cook your stir fries out in the carport?

Carlycat · 04/11/2022 07:54

I have a Bosch induction. It's bloody awesome 👌

PrunellaMcTat · 08/11/2022 07:11

I actually hadn't thought of it being so shit because it's old and on its way out. I just thought electric hobs were shit and / or I am shit at using them.

We live in a rental and it's built in so it won't be replaced unless it's absolutely kaput - and even then it'd be replaced with something cheap and shit.

Maybe I'll look into getting a single good one like @Skiphopgoosebumps s link?

You know the most heartbreaking part? 6 years ago in another life I bought a stunning double wide electric oven with 6 gas burners on top. It was and is the most beautiful thing I have ever loved. Then our life sort of prolapsed and now it's in a shed somewhere while I burn risotto and cry,

I love my gas oven and hob and would hate to swap back to electric. It so much quicker to get up to heat and doesn't dry food in the oven.

Onandgrowing · 08/11/2022 07:27

You need an induction hob.

As you can’t switch the main one, you could get one or 2 of ikea’s portable ones. www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/tillreda-portable-induction-hob-1-zone-white-70493503/ (They also have a 2 zone one but looks like it’s not in stock)

Me too, fabulous piece of kit. Love induction.

hugoagogo · 08/11/2022 07:53

This sounds like mine, takes forever to heat up and then forever to cool again. I have learnt to use two rings for things that need simmering. Am moving soon so hopefully I can finally be rid of it.

MrsMorrisey · 08/11/2022 07:55

I agree. I have one too that I often proclaim to the family how much I hate it.

lljkk · 08/11/2022 07:56

We have a new (electric hob) cooker with 6 settings (per burner).
Old one was 8 settings.
8 was better !! Funny how a small thing can make such difference.

FlimFlam2 · 08/11/2022 08:21

Do you need special pans for an induction hob? Off to Google.

BarrelOfOtters · 08/11/2022 08:24

Portable induction hobs are cheap and work well.

CaronPoivre · 08/11/2022 08:27

My new induction hob is incredibly bossy. It heats things well, it doesn’t burn little fingers but has a shrieking and insistent whine if it gets splashed or wiped with a damp cloth. It also needs three buttons to get it to heat things - and they’re not even buttons.
It doesn’t gather burnt bits around the hotplates and burners but every smear shows and my husband has to get the magic paste out after each meal.
The children persuaded us when we were refurbishing the kitchen earlier in the year, but I remain to be convinced that it is better.

PicaNewName · 08/11/2022 08:33

The cheapest induction hob is better than the most expensive ceramic one. It warms up and cools down quickly.

Skiphopbump · 08/11/2022 09:36

@FlimFlam2 yes you do, they need to be magnetic. Initially I bought a set of scoville pans from Asda for about £30, I think ikea has an even cheaper set.

Yes, using a camping gas stove indoors increases the risk of carbon monoxide so the covered car port just by the back door is safer.

Babdoc · 08/11/2022 10:24

Very glad I insisted on keeping the gas supply to my kitchen when I renovated! The gas hob is brilliant and instantly controllable - if a milk pan is on the point of boiling over, simply turning down the control knob means it immediately subsides.
A further advantage is that it is unaffected by power cuts, so I will always have a warm
kitchen and hot food.
