Police job - vetting procedure/financial issues.

Have NC'd for this.

I have applied for a job in the police control room of my local force and I'm starting to panic about the vetting check because of my financial situation. I've done some reading and I think they are mostly going to look to make sure your debt is manageable (which mine is) but I was stupid for a bit and have defaulted on two things a couple of years ago.

Briefly, it is as follows:

I owe two different amounts on defaulted cards (an old Argos card account and PayPal credit) totalling about £1100 (only £70 left to pay off on the Argos one). These are debts with third party companies now because the companies sold them on. I can prove consistent payments for the past year and possibly longer.

I also have a few credit cards that I'm paying off as have cancelled the cards. I have also made consistent payments on these for over a year.

I have debt roughly in the amount of about £10k other than this.

All very manageable.

I have occasionally gone into my overdraft and have got a Klarna card as well which is always paid off monthly if it is used.

Writing this all down I actually feel really ashamed. Does anyone know if the above will bar me from passing the vetting check?

In addition to what others have said I'd imagine that financial issues are less risky in a control room job than in other parts of the police anyway as the opportunity to take bribes etc is so much reduced compared to, for example, working in fraud or drug prevention or even just in neighbourhood policing- you have no control over what calls are assigned to you and dont have the opportunity to build relationships with individual members of the public etc.

I think they only care about CCJ

I recently went through vetting process myself ( ministry of justice) and asked on live chat if debt is an issue

Clearly not! I also have credit card debt and an Argos card

I am control room staff and passed vetting with similar sorts of debt to OP. It was only when applying for my mortgage last year a CCJ came to light that only showed on TransUnion and which had been incorrectly applied (it was subsequently set aside in court)

This was never picked up at initial vetting, or if it was they didn't care about it or the fact I had failed to disclose it. I reported it to my line manager as soon as I found out and had to go through vetting again. No issues that time either.

Be honest, and good luck! If I can help at all then PM me 🙂

not the case at all, I have access to many intelligence systems, and that information is worth a lot of money to the wrong people. The last I heard -which was a while ago admittedly- the first PNC vehicle check was worth about a grand….obviously you wouldn’t get anything for subsequent checks as you’d already shown you’re bent so they have leverage over you

Agree with judgerindersminder. I have access to far more info from my desk than the average bobby on the street and due to the amount of checks I make, I've a greater chance of carrying out those checks without being the subject of a random audit.

If your debt is manageable it shouldnt be a problem. I'm assuming you've been honest in your answers. If you havnt then you'll likely not pass. Despite the awfulness of some forces vetting is being done to the letter again and I'm aware of a few who have not got through.
Financial stability is important to reduce chance of corruption.
