Anyone adopted an ex-breeding dog?

Hi,

I am considering adopting an ex-breeding dog. I am wondering if anyone has experience with this. How long did it take them to settle, train etc?

I know each dog is an individual but would be interested to hear other people's stories.

Thanks!

We did. We've had her 2 years now got her when she was 5.

She was really anxious the first few days wouldn't eat explosive bowel movements. Wouldn't walk for us. She was a wreck. This only lasted a few days then she started to settle but took a few months for her to really settle in.

She's got a wonderful nature but she has a different nature to dogs who have been pets since pups. She's not a playful dog she doesn't fetch or run or anything like that.

I bought a dog from someone advertising on a well known site. I wanted a pug that was not a puppy - around 12 months - and when I read the ad she looked perfect.
The reality was far from what they claimed her to be.
She was a cross pug/terrier being used to breed pugs without papers. She was older than they said ( only eighteen months) but had (according to my vet) three litters already with the last being by caesarean and so they could not use her any more.
They put her to breed on her first season. How utterly cruel.
She had never played with other dogs. She did not know what a toy was, had lived in a cage for most of her short life and had never been taken for a walk.
When I arrived to se her she was feeding babies in a cage. Her teats were hanging down and her nails were like talons. They just wanted rid of her.

She was shocked at the sight of other dogs when we took her for a walk. We had to take things slowly. She is the nicest little dog you could ever wish to meet. She walks by my side without a lead wherever I go and never leaves me. We now have another pug which we bought this year and she mothers the puppy as if she were her own. They are so sweet together it makes my heart burst.
If I had not taken her off the breeder they would have shot her.
I always think a dog comes to you for a reason. Sometimes your need is greater than theirs and vice versa

Our old dog was assumed to be a breeded because she was found abandoned with her teats still full and showed all the signs of being bred. I'm not sure how she was initially but she was the most loving and caring dog you could ever meet. When we got a kitten she absolutely took her on as her own and would pull her under her legs to protect her.
