I feel this is a massive marketing ploy by Iceland. It makes me feel a bit sick to be honest that they are using people in terrible circumstances like this. Also how nutritional are these 1p ready meals. One ready meal will be just that one meal. Why are they not doing for example a soup pack for 1p where that could provide a weeks worth of hot meals.

Disgusting move from them in my opinion.

They did vegetables last year. But with energy prices as they are, I think changing from something that needs cooking, and have other things with it, to something that can go in the microwave and be eaten as it is, is sensible.

Whatever their motives it could help a lot of people feed their families. But I'm not cynical, I'd like to think it was genuine.

Have you even read the article @DutchessOfMuck ?

It says it's part of a 'cooker switch off' challenge, so getting people to make soup kind of defeats the object. Plus it says they've done a previous promotion on fresh veg, so are now doing something different.

Of course it's a marketing ploy, to encourage people to shop online with them. You can buy up to 3 of their £1 ready meals for almost nothing if you spend £25, so it might cause some people to try their online service that they've not done before.

People can decide whether or not it's worth it to them and try it if it is. I don't see how it's 'disgusting', it's a discount and an incentive to see if online shopping with Iceland works for people who choose to take up the offer.

Plus Iceland are quite an ethical company that treat their staff well, with some good ideas that are trying to help lower income customers and reduce their impact on the environment. Plus they sell far more than ready meals, pizza etc, so it gives people a chance to see for themselves.

blebbleb · 02/11/2022 11:27

Some very stuck up comments about ready meals. What about those who can't afford or don't have the time to cook from scratch every day. It doesn't hurt now and again.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 02/11/2022 11:29

Thank you for sharing the link OP.

WhatAboutGiraffes · 02/11/2022 11:31

OP thanks for sharing these for those of us who don't get up at 5 every day to milk our organic goats. It's nice to have a lie-in some days from milling grain for bread.

HangerLaneGyratorySystem · 02/11/2022 11:33

H went to Iceland yesterday and got an over 60s discount! Funny thing was they didn’t ask him, so I suppose if the cashier thinks you’re old, you’ve automatically got 10% off! He’s 65 and looks older but even so … not sure if want to test my luck with it … 😂

Favouritefruits · 02/11/2022 11:35

why do people always suggest soup, yes it’s nourishing and cheap but most people don’t want to eat soup daily just because they are in a rough patch financially, it’s a bit of a change being able to pick a ready meal of your own choice rather than being told or given something you wouldn’t normally choose.

Soup is fabulous and I eat it almost daily despite being able to afford other foods. Lots of people love soup and it is filling and nutritious.

DutchessOfMuck · 02/11/2022 11:44

Just because they done vegetables last year doesn't mean they can't do it again this year. It takes 20 mins to make a pot of soup and then a few minutes a day to heat it up. Is using a microwave really that much cheaper? People in poverty need nutritious food or that's when ill health happens. It takes about 10 minutes to chop everything and pop it in a pot for soup.

@WhatAboutGiraffes 😂😂😂😂 that made me laugh.

DutchessOfMuck · 02/11/2022 11:48

So on these ready meals for 1p the person would save £2.97 but its online shop only. So the person would need to make up the minimum delivery spend. So theres how Iceland make there money back. Forcing people to spend more. Up to £40 to get free delivery.

because for 7 p they can have meals that are easy to cook?

Ekateri · 02/11/2022 11:52

“With research showing that people are giving up hot dinners due to cost-of-living concerns, offering frozen ready meals for 1p means shoppers can add them to their shop and freeze meals until they are needed.”

(you can only have 30

Ekateri · 02/11/2022 11:52

argh 3!! not 30

Gymnopedie · 02/11/2022 11:55

Yes. Especially if it's an electric hob.

Presumably the person will be buying groceries anyway - we all do don't we?
Iceland has had a few incentives for people who are struggling. They seem to be the only supermarket who is doing anything to help people in food poverty.

Thelnebriati · 02/11/2022 12:01

''Forcing'' is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. Weird how some people are more disgusted by cheap food than poverty.

When did I say that I wasn't disgusted with poverty?

MichelleScarn · 02/11/2022 12:05

Are Iceland going out there and stopping people shopping elsewhere? FORCING them to shop at Iceland?

It's like that thread of complaints that not every cafe and restaurant was offering to feed kids for free with no spend and how evil and awful that was!

mamabear715 · 02/11/2022 12:07

Thanks @Gymnopedie I'm sure it will be very useful for lots of people. :-)

👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿how is it "disgusting" to sell a ready meal for 1p?. You can definitely buy a pack of frozen mixed vegetables to go with it with some of the money saved!. You just cant please some people even if you gave them your head on a platter of gold!

kateandme · 02/11/2022 12:11

It’s is only 3 they can have too. They aren’t just giving them away. That’s 22 on other groceries too. Every little helps.

GoodnightGentleBoris · 02/11/2022 12:12

I must have misread the article as I can’t see where it says that everyone is legally obligated to take part in this?
