Things you thought were posh/exciting/unattainable as a child that are actually everyday items

I'm just searching for scotch tape on Amazon ready for Christmas. It got me thinking how double sided sticky tape was but a dream back when I was little. Blue Peter used it all the time but it was something I'd never have. The same with play dough. I only ever had plasticine. Scotch tape was fancy too, we only ever had yellow sellotape. Ribera. I'm sure I'll think of others.

@YDBear yes my DM said continental quilts when we first got them late 80s I think.

My best friend's parents, when I was at school in the 50s, were very well off although of course I didn't realise at the time. They had those blue block things dangling in their loos, now I think they are unhygienic disgusting things which everyone pees on but there is still a little something still in me which makes me think ' so posh'!

Rachand23 · 03/11/2022 18:17

a box of Vesta - even the adverts made them sound luxurious. For those of you too young to remember they were like an early pot noodle , think chow Mein for example, ads made you think you were getting an authentic Chinese meal - they always included tiny dried little peas!

Shop-bought cakes. My mum wouldn't buy them and baked everything.

Grapes - I thought only rich people or those in hospital got those.

Grapes were a very infrequent treat in our house and were always strictly rationed.

Kitchen roll! And a proper chopping board. We just chopped on plates as were were always too poor to invest in a chopping board 😂

Tusue · 03/11/2022 18:25

I’m probably one of the older mums on this but my posh item would have been imperial leather soap, I went to a friends house and there it was on the bathroom sink ,label showing etc, ohh I was soo impressed.
At home we used soap bought from the local pit head baths -now that does age me
.

I saw orange juice as a starter at a hotel in Scotland in 2002. Can anyone beat that?

They still do it as a starter in hospitals 😁

There is a well known fish and chip restaurant near me that still offers orange or apple juice as a starter now.

Upwiththelark76 · 03/11/2022 18:37

Vienetta ice cream 🙈what treat if we had it on a Sunday !

pumpkins for Halloween ! We used a turnip!

Cookerhood · 03/11/2022 18:38

I inherited my parent's grapefruit knife. A proud moment.
Orange juice was very posh. We used to get it in a glass bottle for Christmas, it didn't taste very nice, then the frozen one which was much nicer & actually very convenient.
For my 12th birthday party (mid 70s) my mother had heard of a bakery about 6 miles away that sold pizza cut up into squares - just tomato & cheese. We had to pre order it & collect it on the day. I thought I had died & gone to heaven.
We were early adopters of "continental quilts" in the mid 70s as well. I took mine to uni with me in 1981 & it was fairly ancient by then. It was from m&s. I begged for it after my friend had one. She had a french mother which may have explained it 😂

After Eights

00kitty · 03/11/2022 18:43

Fizzy drinks were Christmas only
Jaffa cakes at my aunts at Christmas and ditto my aunt again with marshmallows
Taxis were never used - must have assumed for the wealthy
Never ever had new clothes

we grew up really poor though

we never ever ate out until I was about 13 then the very occasional trip to the Italian mums circs changed and was then a 2 income household, now they have fizzy drinks all the time!

Narwhaleahoy · 03/11/2022 18:44

A set of seven knickers that each had a day of the week printed on them.

Hattie1970abc · 03/11/2022 18:44

Always wanted to stop at a motorway service station, especially one that bridged over both sides of the motorway. It was far too expensive to stop there. We would pull up in a lay by and eat our homemade sandwiches with warm coke or Iron Bru instead. Takeaway chips once a year. Never went to a cafe or a pub with my parents. Once when staying at a friends her parents took us to a pub for a meal and I had scampi and chips in a basket. I felt really sophisticated

Patapouf · 03/11/2022 18:45

Pesto

bellocchild · 03/11/2022 18:54

On our honeymoon in 1969, in our pretty posh hotel, we were served spaghetti milanaise as a starter. It turned out to be Heinz tinned spaghetti in tomato sauce with a sprinkling of dried grated parmesan over it.

MumASD · 03/11/2022 18:55

Go out to the Wimpy for burger and chips

IcakethereforeIam · 03/11/2022 19:02

Strappy gold and silver heeled sandals, when we went to the shoe shop to get our boring school shoes, I totally coveted them.

I forgot as I got older but a trip to Blackpool Tower ballroom reminded me of them and convinced me they're truly magic. There were old ladies wearing these and, it seemed, barely able to walk. Until they stepped onto the ballroom floor, the years fell away and they whirled off dancing.

Somersetgirl1 · 03/11/2022 19:02

Vesta curry!!!!

I used to have it at my friends house and thought we should be dressed like Omar Shariff!!!!

Spiceyricey · 03/11/2022 19:04

Rare steak. Admittedly it is a bit of a luxury but I do indulge every now and then

bellocchild · 03/11/2022 19:05

Not just orange juice for starters, probably tinned, but tinned grapefruit segments. Fresh grapefruit with the segments carved out and left in the skin and a maraschino cherry on top was just plain decadent.

Lovely13 · 03/11/2022 19:09

Homes in the 70s that had freezers and weekly delivery of Radio Times were dead posh in my strange little mind!

ZebraLyghts · 03/11/2022 19:12

Products that weren't shops-own brand eg shampoo.
Fruit and veg.
A car.
A shower.
Dishwashers and tumble dryers seemed like millionaire-level extravagance!
